That means serious trouble. 2019 annual global retail sales were still 558.000, already 5.9% down from 2018. And the resulting cost saving efforts that we saw were already very serious. You now cannot simply extrapolate the Q1 2020 to full year, but with the global economy as it is this year, the full year 2020 sales drop will run into double digits percentage. Don’t think they have much in store to weather this.

To put the figures into perspective when the world was in a better place.
Jeep Wrangler sales January to June 2019 (not Gladiator), just under 117,000. Total Jeep branded vehicles just under 457,000 An interesting figure to know is how much did the new Defender cost to bring to market against total value sold and profits per vehicle. Looks like as soon as the Bronco is available to buy, Jeep are looking to put a V8 Hemi into the Wrangler. Basically another kick in the gentleman's area for Land Rover. |

I have several American work colleagues who cannot wait for their new Defenders to get to them, they already own Range Rovers, the Defenders will be additional cars not replacing the FFRRs and they wouldn’t be seen dead in a Bronco or a Jeep, they would sooner buy a Korean SUV than buy American. These guys are as dedicated to LR products as any of us having owned numerous Series, Discoveries and RRS’s between them. I think you are looking in the wrong direction - comparison year on year is obviously difficult but what is a reasonable comparison is how the various Land Rover models sold against themselves in the same period:  Click image to enlarge To sell less than half the volume of the critically panned D5 must be disappointing for JLR and, again, runs in completely the wrong direction of travel to all noises they have been making about it being a near runaway success... For comparison in the first quarter of sales the Evoque sold over 27,000, Discovery Sport over 13,500 and the Velar over 8,800. |

That was the crux of my comment above and Tim’s reply. Yes you can have the best product in the world.......but a business, any business needs to sell in volume to continue to grow and invest. As new Land Rovers are the IPhone of the car world, they are disposable items. Both because a newer and more exciting model has been released but also because the older model cannot be trusted and needs to be got rid of. If the dealer experience is repeated to ‘none’ Land Rover consumers as they are to the established enthusiast then there is no repeat business. Is it time for Jaguar, Land Rover and Range Rover to split and go their separate ways under a different vehicle manufacturer, Ie Land Rover to Mercedes Commercial, Range Rover to VW/ Bentley and Jaguar to whoever owns Aston Martin. The big question is what will Tata do. ......  |

They tried splitting LR and RR up in 2011 with the newly launched Evoque, it didn’t have a Land Rover badge on it anywhere, might of had one on the rear though can’t remember, but those plans where scrapped as owners liked the history and association with the LR brand. |
