MOT showed this - what does it mean?
Any help would be great to interpret what this means from 1 of a few cars I'm going to look at this week.

Nearside Rear Suspension component mounting repair covered in underseal (5.3.6 (a) (i))
Offside Rear Suspension component mounting repair covered in underseal (5.3.6 (a) (i))
vehicle chassis and under body wax oiled

any help would be good

Thanks in advance

Those comments are a get out of jail free card for the tester. Basically, the vehicle has been undersealed and therefore the tester can't see the chassis to pass judgement on it. Darren

Thanks

Is underselaed good or bad?

Its "done" 3-4k a year for a few years according to the MOT's.....last 10yrs I think....and MOT history seems fairly clear most years from what I see...

I can’t stand the stuff, makes working on a car harder than it should and can hold water and harbour corrosion which is then difficult to spot early.

But others love to splash it on. Each to their own! JB

It entirely depends on the quality of the application. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Sounds like someone has repaired it and then clagged it over with thick bitumen to hide their work.
If it’s needed repairs there, check the rest of the chassis for soundness.

Hmmm, a bit like the comment 'brake pipes covered in grease or similar' - call me a sceptic but things like that are usually done to cover substandard repairs or faults, such as rust, that would otherwise result in an MoT failure.

How do you tell the difference between a rough repair hidden by underseal and a decent repair protected by underseal? Darren

Tap it with a hammer or use a fine flat fronted drift. If you damage the underseal and find the repair is perfect, just slap a bit more on, if you find the repair inadequate, it's all coming off anyway.

Surely if you are spending good money to buy a used Defender and can not determine the condition of the chassis because it’s been coated for whatever reason then you should walk on by and find another? You don’t want to be buying a potential death trap when there are plenty of honest ones looking for new homes. Is it also a too good to be true asking price as well? Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Given the advisories quoted, it appears the MoT testers wouldn't go that far. Darren
