 I think I see what you mean, and no doubt it would be a 'solution'... but I don't think my wife and the rest of the family would be too impressed!
Andy T - thanks for that - I'll have a look at that Thule kit, see if its sizes are within the space I have available. Darren - I thought of that too! The issue is just how much headroom I have - and why I was asking about small size pulleys. This is where it needs to go, roughly between the two strip lights - once it's tidied....  Click image to enlarge I reckon I have about 60cm between the roof and my head. If it hangs any lower than that I'll be bashing my head against the feet of the roof bars. I could remove them, but then you're just adding another task that needs to be done to mount/demount the tent. The bars and tent will be about 52cms, so I have about 8cms to accommodate whatever lifting solution I go for (short of getting the JCB in to remove the wall and dig out the floor....  )
JST's pulleys will do that, especially as they could be fitted outside the area of the tent, allowing it to be lifted nearly flush with the garage roof. I don't think I've the clearance to get a lifting frame in there, though something along those lines was among my earlier thoughts - maybe getting a frame welded - but I'd still need room for whatever roof mounting there is, and the hook/shackle onto the frame. I'll keep thinking, but at the moment, unles the Thule thing fits, and looks up to the lift, then the hand pull, with s pulley arrangement int each corner is closest to the KISS principle. Hmm, with a suitable arrangement of pulleys, the ropes could be led off to one side across the ceiling and down the wall. Or mount a hoist like mine to one side at the top of the wall.
Or fix a frame to the ceiling to take the tent, hinged at one end to allow the other end to drop down. Slide on tent and lift up. A bit like a spare wheel Tufflift, where you are only lifting half the weight. Lots of solutions but some ingenuity required, probably with input from Heath Robinson  Darren

In fact the hinged cage idea ( with a very Heath Robinson ethic!) is something I've just tried in the cellar adjacent to the garage. That would work. But in there the headroom is much less and the current tent more or less enters the cage at ground level. The problem is that this cellar is entered via a pedestrian door, and up a step. My son and I managed to get the tent in there and onto the cage, and up against the joists. But he won't be home too much (short of another pandemic shutting down his Uni course) so it has to go somewhere I can manage this solo. A hinged cage in the garage I've pictured would be just too high and difficult to do myself. The pulley arrangement is what I described about 4 or 5 posts up, but as I said, it's the kind of thing you have to see to properly understand what someone's describing. This idea is currently in the lead! How about a combination of the two? A cage that's lifted by a single pulley at one end? It would certainly simplify the rope work. Darren

How about just jacking the vehicle up with a couple of trolley jacks, a couple of ratchet straps around the tent and ceiling and let the vehicle back down?

Nope. The die is cast. I've ordered 8 pulleys. Four for the 'lift' and four more to run the rope along the roof and down the wall. Can't see progress being lightning fast as I'll have to get the garage cleared first - and the bulk of what's there is a kitchen that needs to cross the minch to a hebridean island.... with no ferries running.... I daren't ask for any suggestions about that!!
