mounting your roof tent
mounting your roof tent....

very happy owner of new maggio roof tent, i have been thinking about a 1 man controlled way of mounting and dismounting the tent.

it weights about 55kgs, so not too bad but it's bulky.

If you have a roof tent, how do you get it on and off your roof ?

Currently I'm thinking about getting an engine hoist and modding it to make it higher ...

Your thoughts gentlemen ....

my tent. howling moon 1.6 Cool
i've put an electric hoist in the apex of workshop.
i also put a couple of spacer lengths of 20x40mm aluminium box under tent
that has two stainless bolts protruding.
so i reverse car into workshop under tent back offside wheel in painted box (on floor)
lower tent with remote it.s usually within 4-5" of fitting so i use one hand to move tent one on remote
locate two bolt mentioned into two holes in roof rack and hey presto in the right place every time.
two bolts line up at the front, 4 security nuts and off i go.
about 10- 15 mins from start to finish. one man operation.
reverse to remove. once tent has been lifted off car i the store it on two pieces of unistrut that spans roof trusses. Thumbs Up

so never the excuse it's a hassle to put the tent on Thumbs Up 110 xs s/wagon

I have the manbo roof bars which are good but you can't take the tent off the bars because the bolts are inaccessable. so I have added a lifting eyelet to each corner of the front and rear bars (i opted for 3 bars)

my thoughts .. a hook + chain diagonally over the front and rear eyelets. But my garage is not tall enough to allow me to drive in with the tent on, so I need a temporary structure or A frame or engine hoist

You could possible look at some of the options given to Kayakers. There is a system where the roof bars have hinged extensions which come down the side, you place your Kayak onto these bars then simply lift and push the whole thing onto the roof. Quite clever Wink And you can load up some serious weight this way Very Happy

You will have to Google or call a Kayak shop for the various makers Thumbs Up

What rack do you put that on?
And what way round do you mount it?

I know it won't help you BP man but Lidl are doing electric hoists this week for a reasonable price:

My rack stays on perm, and just time visits from friends and relatives to help lift the rooftent on/off. Not the best solution but works for me. Aim is to raise the roof of the garage and use a pulley system. But mine is on a D3 not a Def. But at the end of the day it's all the same 110 D250 SE HT

No good for hard-shell tents I suspect, but for our fold-out canvas Howling Moon we are going to try something like this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7r0hGS5uDM

Don't have a drop down tailgate on my 90, but thinking we could adapt something to 'table height to get a similar effect. B&D Workmate and / engine hoist may come in useful too. Can't use the garage as it is not high enough and is full of tools and spares so you can't get a motor in anyway, even a smartcar!

My house now is the first one ever where I've had a garage, when I moved in I had great plans of raising the roof and making some new doors Rolling Eyes It wasn't beyond me, doing that sort of thing was part of my business Wink

Thing was, I started filling up the garage as a workshop/storage from the very first day and that is how it is 3 years later Whistle so I'm resigned to the fact that all the work done on my Defender or others is done outside next to the garage Rolling Eyes As an aside I discovered the "height" of my Defender with the CB ariel Shocked When I called into a certain BP garage in Hereford I could hear the ariel chattering to the canopy Shocked and it was marked up at 12', so now I know Thumbs Up
