Apps are great, until the developer decides they are bored with that concept and has found a much more interesting way of doing it. They don’t give two hoots about the customer. See smart TVs for details. Another way of making you buy a new car when half of the app stops working.

I could never (and still don’t) understand the need to “mirror” a smartphone screen on the dash - it’s simple, you aren’t supposed to be using a phone of any kind while driving so what is the difference between using your dash to display a phone screen and using a phone? First time I received an SMS in my Mini I nearly had a heart attack when the lady in the dash read it out at full volume and then asked me to dictate a reply! Driving’s dangerous enough without having to deal with the phone or choosing music from your phone too.
My car now has this thing called a WiFi hotspot in it - what’s it for? I cannot surf the net while I’m driving and why should I pay for others to use my data allowance if they are travelling with me. One of the most distracting things in my Dad’s Morris Marina was my NaN, his Mother, when he was driving her anywhere. His driving was definitely different, and not for the better.
Everyone blames phones, but if you are distracted by anything whilst you are driving, and the CPS can prove it, you will get charged. Whether JLR screwed it into the dash or whether it’s a phone in a cradle or you are trying to get your wallet out of your trousers at a Toll (don’t know how many of you have done that dance) it’s all either driving without due care and attention or dangerous driving. Why phones get clobbered is because they leave a trail of electronic breadcrumbs as you are using it which gets used in evidence against you. I’ve never heard of a car being interrogated after an accident, and I am not sure if it is possible to do, but the more gadgetry that gets installed, the more easier it will be for a prosecution after an accident. |

It isn’t just interrogation of the car after an accident (which has been possible on all new LR products since 2014) but remember when Johnnie 2Jags Suggested that speed could easily be controlled remotely.......... it’s been proved by hackers into car systems that is quite easily done once you get through the security. We’ve been able to voluntarily set electronic speed limiters in our cars for a few years now with a dash board control Aka Automatic Speed Limiter. I can remotely start and stop my new Defender from my mobile phone as well so I can warm the cabin on cold mornings and I assume to help drive away emissions (although they seem forget it isn’t good for emissions to leave a Diesel engine idling or good for the DPF). And look at the things a Tesla can do - drive itself to you while you wait on the pavement if you want! I’ve been using Apple CarPlay in the Velar for a while now, mainly because it’s far superior to LRs own system.

New Defender has a new system, PiviPro. It’s better than the BNW system that was in my Mini in many ways but there is one thing that the BMW system is way better - the controller/ mouse was much better than having to use the touch screen soft keys, after a few uses I never needed to look at the keys or the rotating dial. I don’t understand LR’s resistance to a mouse type controller which is far less distracting than taking your eyes off the road to find the icons on a screen. I cannot comment on the system in LR cars after 2016MY as my RRS was pre-Incontrol TouchPro and that early version from 2015 was fine.
Also the voice control in the BMW system was way ahead of anything I had had previously in LR cars, it just worked. The voice control system in the Parrott Asteriod system I have in my Def90 is very good. So far I haven’t tried using it in my new car as I haven’t needed to use it yet. What has been proved by hackers so far is that there is no security, there are however technical challenges. I don't know about the new defender (which is I think the first vehicle with keyless entry to have effective proximity detection, at last, which is the only effective counter to the well-known 'range extender' vulnerabilities that most manufacturers have willfully ignored for years) so it may be that there is at last some level of security built in. In general modern cars offer the lowest level of cyber protection they can get away with. As attacks, especially ransom attacks, become more common, this may change. Virtually all modern cars are technologically capable of automatic speed limit enforcement, and I am surprised that this hasn't been proposed yet. They are also already capable of self-reporting speed limit violations. Many can report who is driving at aby time. Virtually all modern vehicles detect and in most cases record a volume and range of information which would horrify the civil libertarians if they knew it was going on. There is a story from the US, which may well not be true, of a person prosecuted for a driving offence after he said his wife was driving, but since the car was recording the mass of the front-seat occupants and he was substantially heavier than his wife, it was proven that he was lying. I believe that the systems which automatically report your accident and summon help generally also report how many people are in the vehicle. And of course all of this information is available to the savvy hacker, along with the ability to track your vehicle. |

do all of these self start systems simply ignore the 'quitting' offence of leaving a vehicle unattended with the engine running??

It would appear so, although there are situations permitted in law where you can leave a vehicle unattended with the engine running, namely situations where the vehicle's engine is required to be running in order to power equipment mounted on the vehicle.
Generally this covers the situation where vehicles are providing site lighting at emergency scenes and that sort of thing. Police vehicles are often left with the engines running due to the power consumption of the comms and computing equipment on-board. Generally such vehicles are fitted with a runlock system so the key can be removed and the vehicle locked with the engine running. I am fairly sure however that have the engine running on an unattended vehicle to allow the electric seat heating to work is not in scope of the regs. I guess you'll be ok on private property provided the RTAs don't apply, but elsewhere, dodgy I would say. It also makes something of a mockery of stop-start technology and the whole green credentials thing. |

An important point about the runlock systems I have used is that the engine shuts off if you try and move the car. You dad to either reinsert the key and turn the ignition on, or on some keyless cars, you had to stop the engine and restart with the key present. That may have improved as it’s 4 or 5 years or so since I last used one. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
