Clutch master cylinder problem
Hi there!

I have some troubles with the clutch master cylinder. I have already installed 2 of them with the main dealer and both were leaking though the seals in less than a month. Both were manufactured by TRW: as far as I know the parent company of Girling/Lucas, the original ones.

I Installed the the original one week ago and until now nothing happens but I'm afraid that the problem were located in other part.

Some idea about how good are the TRW parts?
Other things to look for a failure?

Thanks in advance Eduardo

Hi

It is interesting that you note that the "Main Dealer" is installing TRW master cylinders and not Genuine LR ones.

I know if you order OEM/britpartG/allmakes PR2 (original equipment) you often get a TRW one in a red box. If you compare the outside of the TRW one and the outside of the Genuine one they have little differences. So they might come out of the same factory but are different on the outside. I dont know if the same specification internals are used?

Usually I dont have much problem with the TRW ones but you can still be unlucky.

I guess that if the cylinder is installed incorrectly you could wear it out prematurely. I have always thought that if you incorrectly tighten the two nuts on the threaded rod then you could introduce a pressure onto the rod that acts down or up and not along the shaft. Thus wearing out the rubbers in the cylinder quicket then normal.

Also I would check that the nuts on the threaded rod are adjusted correctly so that the pedal sits in the correct place. Some where on the net you will find the measurement from the floor inside the car to the underside of the pedal.

Cheers

Thanks for your thoughts I will check in the WEB for the distances
By the way, I provide the spares to be installed so I I'm only use the labour from them.

By the way: TRW owns the plant that build the original cylinder and according to the Girling webpage they provide the cylinders to TRW.

Cheers Eduardo
