Not a common problem, never seen that before!
Has the matrix burst or just the airbox? |

Hi Blackwolf,
Just the airbox has burst I believe! It went in as the aircon has failed so not sure how long its been like this! Regards 2Hooky |

Very strange! If it is just the plastic airbox, I would suspect that either it was cracked when it was assembled, or the garage has broken it getting it out. It is, as far as I recall, an ABS moulding which is reasonably strong but quite brittle, so it would take some form of impact to do that. Being ABS it should be possible to glue it back together again. Either that or face a huge bill for a new one, or find a second-hand one on an internet auction site.
As far as I recall there is no difference in the airbox housing between a/c and non-a/c, so you could swap your a/c heat exchanger into a non-a/c heater box. That is undoubtedly a bit of a bummer, it looks almost as though you've had a gas explosion in there! |

Would that damage have been visible in situ?

Probably not, I would think. It would affect the heater performance with air coming out in strange places though, unless it only sprang apart when it came out.

Looks suspiciously to me like someone has tried to force it out before all the fixings had been removed. The way the casing has spalled suggests the end panel has still been fixed to something & the box has been levered away from it... As others have said it takes a bit of effort to break this sort of plastic like that.
Are the broken edges clean or do they have dust on them like the rest of the outside? - if they're clean then the break is new! |

The broken edges look pretty clean to me in the photo.

Does the bracket (top center of image) look distorted/twisted with a small crack propergating from the center of it? Looks like some force has been applied to it.... Zaid-M

That's why I asked the question as it looks clean to me too.
Initially I thought this was the box on the bulkhead on the near side of the engine bay but now realise it's the heater box from inside the dash which makes me pretty certain that it's been broken by someone trying to pull it out when it's still connected somewhere - no way has that break occurred in normal use, it has taken some effort to do that!! The call saying "you've got a broken heater box" should actually have said "we're very sorry but we've damaged the heater taking it out" - is it a LR dealer who've done it or just a local garage? I'd be having words at this point if it had happened to me. |

This video shows how difficult it is to remove. I 'd say it was damaged by them trying to get it out.

From watching that video, my guess would be that someone has tried using a pry bar or lever behind the front edge of the side that's broken to try and lever the unit backwards away from the bulkhead rather than pivot it out from the top. In doing so they have pulled the side out of the box - are there any tell tale marks on the front face near to the corner with the side that's broken or scratches/marks in the paint in the bulkhead?

In the photo the box is upside down, the round spigot top left is the drain, and the rectangular block at bottom left sticks through the bulkhead for the a/c. The break is between the bottom of the box and the side which faces the driver, parallel to the floor. Assuming that it's a RHD vehicle they've removed the blanking plate covering the unused LHD air inlet port, where the screw (bottom centre) is sticking out.
It really does look like damage due to ham-fisted removal, I'm afraid. |
