Personally i would not have a rigid ankle but would do daily ankle exercises to keep the movement you have rather than loose more. Also, don't give up on reasonable exercise
Have you researched other treatment options? Steroid injections are known to be very painful and not a long term option. May be worth checking out chiropractor, osteopath, physio. Hope it works out Tommo |

Sorry to hear the ankle is giving you so much jip, i had mine opped on about 7 years back for a different problem (damaged ligaments and refixing my posterior tibial tendon PTT). The arthritis does give me hell occasionally but i find taking Glucosamine Hydrochloride (NOT sulphate) helps a lot.
re. steroid injections I was told by my consultant not to have them as they can make the tendons brittle over time I hope it improves for you |

The choice I shall leave ultimately to you,
But one of my long standing close friends had a big bike crash aged about 20 and his ankle was tied up solid internally, He has ridden bikes as soon as he could afterwards every day to get to work and still does to this day ( he retired work last year ) He is no racer but runs rings around me |

my mum many years ago had multiple surgery she had sever arthritis ultimately helping with her cause of death
be very carful having surgery its last resort if you can manage with steroid injections for now I would mum was full of scars she had both hips replaced both knees and hand surgery to stop her fingers touching her palm the pain she suffered she passed away at 60 and to be honest it was a blessing for her . two years ago I lost my best mate my dad he was a saint he stood by my mum a times when a lot would walk away . I hope what ever way you go you get the best result Andy |

I have the exact same problem with my left ankle from an Injury years ago where a little 🤬 broke my ankle at work for me.
This has worn away the cartilage where I now have bone on bone with the pain you describe. Mines frequently let’s go with out warning and unceremoniously dumps me on my posterior ( bit of an interesting reaction you get when it happens in the middle of Asda whilst doing the shopping! ) I was offered the very same surgery by my Consultant but politely declined. My G.P, whom I have known many for decades now, supported my decision saying that given how this will change the way you walk, hip, back, knee and other various stresses , strains and possible ligament damage will surely follow. The pain sometimes is quite overwhelming and I do have regular pain medication but the thought of having that option for the rest of my life, no thanks. I understand your pain and frustration but perhaps just a caution against a decision you will live with for the rest of your life. Diclofenac Gel amongst other medication works wonders for me! |
