One of the suggestions i got when I asked this same question was to go for a recore. Mine 300tdi was well shot - lots of the fins were gone and some of the coolant pipes were completely unsupported, but it did have the metal end tanks so was able to be rebuilt.
When the guy measured it, he said he could also get a bigger core into the same space, so i went for that. I think it was a little more expensive than buying a new one, but not that much. I asked the question on here, so a search should find it. Edit - dug it out - here's the thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic58753...t=radiator Donald 1994 Defender 300Tdi 110 SW - owned since 2002 - 230k miles and going strong (The 'rolling restoration' or tinkering thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic58538.html ) 2000 Range Rover P38 4.0L V8 in the past.. If the one fitted at the moment is the original brass version, then get it recorded. That is the gold standard.

exactly what i did. If i remember right original is 2 core and i went for 3 cores. No overheating at all, works very well and i,ve hammered my 200tdi pulling 3t up massive hills, but i guess massive is subjective. |

Thanks for the replies.
In the end I ordered a Allmakes one from JGS4x4 for a very good price. It fitted just fine and seems do to a very good job, after a 250 mile trip of mixed driving it kept the engine cool and an improvement on the old one. I have kept the original to be re-cored if needed in the future. BORG - Bucks & Oxon 4x4 Response Group |

how long did yours take to bleed? I think my dads needs to be bleed like, it went to temp on tick over no bother. But i think it needs a good run. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

After filling the rad and expansion bottle I took a hose off the heater matrix and filled through the hose until all air was expelled. I have found in the past this is the best way to remove any air from the system. I don't think that leaving it ticking over it would ever get warm enough.
In the past after a long run, while it never got hot, the engine would smell quite warm and the rad was quite hot. Probably have the opposite problem with it running to cool now. BORG - Bucks & Oxon 4x4 Response Group |

Mini Anaconda, totally OT but I hear your Series Two has now moved up to near me, in South Cambs.
If this is true, I might meet it at the local pub meet - when we are allowed to go to pubs again. |

I will keep this in mind, my dad decided to bleed it through the rad top, he said some air had come out of the system, laugh was he said it was fine, and it didn't need a bleed What a fool he is at times! I have the same problem - and ordered the Bearmach one with brass tanks. Their technical advisor told me I need the adaptor BTP1823U to match the oil line fittings. Well, it turned out that the BTP1823 does not accept these adaptors and they offered me to return the radiator and suggested I should order the cheap radiator with plastic end tanks... Hence my question, is there really no adaptor that would fit this radiator and accepts the cone style oil fittings, such as NTC3858 for example? This is what I need: Could it be that these are still the old oil lines from the original 19J? Could I simply swap them to have the matching thread for BTP1823? And if not, which reasonably priced radiator with metal end tanks could you suggest? cheers Philippe Last edited by Eppilihp on 7th Feb 2021 11:24am. Edited 2 times in total |

Aren’t all modern cars with an aluminum radiator and plastic headers? They seem to last pretty well there.
I bought one of these rads for my 19J, but have not fitted it yet, so cannot say how bad or good they are. But what I plan doing in mine is to etch prime it and paint it flat black, both for cosmetic and protection. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |
