Yesterday while finding suitable earth points for a CB aerial me and my dad noticed this on the diff, is it normal? it feels almost rubbery.

also whilst your under there, check the wiring harness isn't chaffing against the dif housing

If out of warranty you can buy the seal for £18 and EP80W-90 oil and have ago yourself. I'm no mechanic and did it out back of my house in an hour'ish. Sweep

Hello,
If you change the seal, check the pipe on the axle. It could have mud in it and stop the axle to breathe when it's warm, the pressure can break the seal. |

Thanks guys, i have looked and I can't find where the breather comes out in the engine bay. Where should it be?

It does not go the engine bay. It goes just a meter or so up. Follow the line.

also the breather should go up behind the cover for the the back of the lights, this was the fix land rover cme up with to stop them filling with mud which then lead to water in the fuel, i believe it was negative preasure in the tank drew water through the lock in the filler cap!

I have been looking, and the only pipe I could find goes all the way to the engine bay. I lose it at the bottom where it enters.

Hello,
Why don't you try to take off the pipe from the axle and put some air into it. First with your breathe, surely not a good taste but you will know if it's free. |

Clean the oil off the diff, with brake cleaner or similar, then see if, and how quick it returns.
Might be the smallest weep and not worth attending to till later. Andy |

You're right, I spent several hours and days trying to stop oil leaking from the transfert box of my first 200tdi. I've finally decided to level oil each 3 or 4 months. 
It's just a defender.
