Are you per chance the chap who made the fantastic cases for Owain's Micrometers and kit? If you are what a brilliant contribution I'd love to have someone as handy as you in our shed! :

Yes that me, I think I'm up to 15 or so at the moment, he will no doubt have more to do when they get back to work.

Is that 'Alice' from Bala?

Yep. Shes just been withdrawn for overhaul and a new boiler.

She was lovely- like a sewing machine, an absolute credit to Julian who owns her and Rob who looks after her!

Chris

Thought so. From my visits and helping at Bala I have met Rob(with the Mini) and Julian who rallies a few times.
My mate has been helping for many years at Bala and I have done some stuff as well. Mainly setting up the radios they use now and then.
Alice, Jurassic, Maid Marion are a few I remember. Is there a Bob as well?

They currently have Quarry Hunslets;
Alice, George B, Maid Marian, Holy War and Winifred then the Peckett-Triassic

Julian I think is running a Talbot Rally car- he also has a really tidy series 2 88"

Definitely a small world, a mate of mine, Peter, is a regular volunteer on the Bala Railway, he travels form Kent, and stays up there for a few days / week at a time.

He also arranged for a group of us to visit last year, whilst we were doing a motorbike trip to North Wales.

Good food at the Bala Sailing Club if anyone fancies a visit!

No Peter, would normally travel up by motorbike, or he sometimes meets with a friend somewhere in the Midlands, and they come across together, and stay in the on site caravans / mobile homes.

What a great thread shaggy, a big thank you for starting it Bow down

The only connection to steam engines is that the wife and i love to go on them for the experience, we have done quite a few now. When i was younger i had a OO gauge hornby railway set up in the loft, they were great times, but not any more but i still have all the railway gauge stuff and all the steam engines as that was what i preferred Very Happy 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

Are you reasonably local to Barnsley?

I'm Guessing your referring to Wortley for pumping and stationary steam if so?

Arc99 - Cracking job well done! I'm sure there will be he has been a fantastic source of help and guidance while I have been trying to sort out our workshop.

GCC 130 - Yes indeed it looks very similar! Where was that? I love the way they have put smoke extractors into the roofs looks very purpose made!

Not sure if this falls foul of any of our rules on here if so I'm happy to comply.

Our railway is running an auction to help raise funds to keep the lights on (or the ability to switch them back on I suppose) and is giving you the chance to have a day as a Steam Engine Driver. As many have expressed an interest in doing it here is a chance to do so and something to look forward too once all this is over.

Quote:
We offer you the chance to share the driving and firing of one of our steam locomotives with a rake of carriages from Tunbridge Wells West to Groombridge return, a total of 14 miles on the footplate of which 7 will actually be spent driving and 7 miles firing. A very unique opportunity to try both roles of the footplate crew.

Our full regulator is open to four participants per day, commencing at 10:00 from Tunbridge Wells West. Upon arrival at our station you will meet your host for the day in our ticket hall, and after an initial safety briefing is given, there will be a guided tour of our engine shed. As the time draws ever closer you will be taken to the locomotive and split into pairs, one pair going onto the locomotive and the other to the train. One pair will spend time on the locomotive driving and firing whilst the other pair spend time on the train with our Guard learning the role they have to play in the trains safety and you will even get the opportunity to wave the green flag too!

What's included:

Driving of the steam locomotive for 7 miles
Firing of the steam locomotive for 7 miles
Guarding the train for 7 miles
Membership to the Tunbridge Wells & Eridge Railway Preservation Society for one year
Free Spa Valley Railway Guide book & goody bag
Presentation certificate
Guided tour of our Engine Shed at Tunbridge Wells West
Visit to Groombridge Signal Box
Complementary ticket for up to five guests to ride on the train

If it is won by someone on the forum I will do my best to be there on the day to meet you and make sure you have a day to remember.

These usually sell for £500 which is still a bargain for these sorts of events but crucially all funds raised will help to keep us up and running.

Shaggydog,

It’s the yard of a well known steam family in Somerset, visited earlier this year during a day out with fellow Series One Club members.
There are three sheds that size including a pair of ploughing engines, showman’s engine, stationary engines, lots of tractors wagons(living and working),

cranes etc. Amazing place, there’s evening a Wednesday club of retired guys who are restoring a Bedford lorry.
A great day out that involved breakfast at a farm shop and several greenlanes.
