Underbody protection?
The time has come to look into underbody protection for the expedition build Very Happy

This is a first for me and im looking for advice on what too use, mostly general expedition use and nothing to heavy in the way of offloading is likely

Essentially I'm looking at a steering guard and diff guards, looks have to play a part as well, after all its my pride and joy!

I like the look of the Bowler steering guard but it's very pricey

im sure I've have heard in the past to avoid certain guards for various reasons?

any way what's your thoughts and experience Thumbs Up 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

On my 90 I’ve got an 8mm aluminium steering guard and a 6mm aluminium fuel tank guard. The steering guard was about £120 from memory and was the thickest I could find. It’s done very well over the last couple of years. The tank guard was a pig to fit and required extensive drilling to make the guard line up with the chassis. I haven’t hit it on anything yet, I don’t think, but it looks good if nothing else! I think it was about £90.

I also have a set of Uproar 4x4 stainless tree sliders fitted. They weren’t cheap but they’re mega strong, will outlast everything else, and look brilliant. Thumbs Up Charlie

If the build is a TDCi, don't forget that the most important piece of underbody protection of all is the fuel cooler guard.

If for remote travel, then avoid alloy as can be difficult to get welded if you have problems. 80" 1948

And aluminium auto case-hardens on impact - so it can be difficult to reshape or remove when damaged (i.e. done its job!)/ JB

Thanks chaps, that is what makes forums invaluable!

Fuel cooler added to the list Thumbs Up

I’m also one of those who likes to have matching set ups (I wouldn’t be able to sleep if I had one tyre different to the others!)

Ok I was initially looking at ali but didn’t realise it’s downfalls some good points about auto case hardening and find it difficult to have welded when the inevitable happens.

I suppose stainless would be the best bet then? Got enough on my hands with corrosion as it is! 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

Zinc finish is pretty good - look at the D44 Clubman steering guard. Looks ok, 5.5mm thick, 3 piece, well designed.

You could always paint it if you like Smile JB

I've been very pleased with my Safari-Equip steering guard.

Mantec Dural one on my 110, works a treat and looks good (a la camel trophy)

I've also got a southdown steel axle guard; the large plate that bolts to the radius arm bolts.... very nice but interferes with the anti roll bar joints. When my plasma cutter is mended I'll cut a couple of holes out of it for the bottom of the joints to rest in.

Steering can be the hardest thing to fix but is essential for any movement.

Gwyn Lewis heavy duty sumo bars drag and track rod. It would be beneficial fitting the track rod end arrangement to the drop arm too, these are far easier to change when out and about.

The southdown guard gives great diff and track rod protection. Or try the gwyn track rod box section. That with sumo bars works very well.

Also think fuel protection for the tank if in stumps or rock areas. Cheers
