8GB USB stick doesn't work in Puma stereo

I've never really got into storing music on stealable devices, so for years I have just kept USB thumb drives in most of my vehicles with a collection of MP3 music dumped onto it as an alternative to whatever is on the radio.

I recently got a couple of small Transcend JetFlash 510 8GB USB2 drives for the two Defenders, having managed to lose one of the my old sticks and another one having gone phut. I need drives that are physically small to avoid damage to the socket from something sticking out from the dash, normal sized ones are quite vulnerable and also vibrate on rough roads.

However - they don't work at all in the Puma stereo (a standard base-level factory radio-CD with a USB port on the front panel) and in my 300Tdi, which has an aftermarket stereo, they only work if you first turn the radio on, wait for the error saying NO DEVICE, and then unplug and re-insert the USB (and then it works fine).

There is nothing wrong with the drives (I've reformatted them and they work perfectly in a PC) and nothing wrong with the stereos in either vehicle, as an older/smaller USB drive that I have in the Shogun works fine in both vehicles.

I assume it might be something to do with either the size or format of the USB drives (I have a dim recollection that over 4GB, drives use some different formatting arrangement) but wondered if anybody could give me any insight into this please, or suggest any solutions? ---

Check the file system type of your USB sticks. If it was formatted as NTFS (windows) or APFS (Apple) it would most likely not work. If you can format as FAT32 it should work just fine. I remember the factory alpine unit that came on my 2015 D90 only supports FAT12,16 & 32. Other file systems like NTFS, exFAT, etc. are not supported. Maybe later they managed to add support for other file systems via firmware updates but I don't know.

FAT32 can handle your 8GB drive just fine. Windows will only allow you to format with FAT32 up to 32GB anyways. So if you have access to a windows PC you should be good. Just right click on your usb stick under my computer, select format, and in the file system drop down menu choose FAT32.

I also used a very small usb stick on the alpine unit and it worked fine (like the one below). Normal ones stick out too much you are right. They would most likely cause some damage if you accidentally hit them with your hands.

Thanks. I've just checked and both are formatted with FAT32, so it isn't that. There are options to format them with exFAT and NTFS, but it sounds like that wouldn't help. I'm at a bit of a loss what to try next, except maybe a different brand of USB, not something I can get locally (not in a micro one anyway). ---

The one time I tried a USB stick with music on in mine, I had the same issues.

Be interested if anyone does have a solution. I just put it down to the wrong file format?

The odd/annoying thing is, having reformatted it again, if you unplug the USB and re-insert it, it now works in the Puma as well, but power off/on and the error comes up every time, unless you physically remove and re-insert the USB. Once it's working, it is fine. Stupid fffin thing

had this problem in my last Audi, the unit would only work with cards up to 4GB maybe your unit is the same nobody is perfect but being Scottish is a start

I wonder if it is to do with the format/file type that the music is stored as?

I've never tried using a USB stick, I just play music from mobile via bluetooth. Could be your other option? James

Thanks, I wonder that too. I just ordered a different brand of mini USB but the trouble is you can't get anything that small nowadays so I had to get a 16GB! If that doesn't work I'll have to go with using an old larger one and hope it doesn't get crunched... ---

Got to the bottom of this having found an original Alpine manual to download.

The CDE-130R doesn't support more than 4GB partititions on a USB storage drive.

One wonders where Land Rover managed to find a stock of radios so old that they can't access anything bigger than 4GB, presumably it was a cheap deal on 2003 factory clearance stock

.....and the solution, for anybody who may be interested, is to download a program called Partition Wizard and just make a partition slightly less than 4GB to store the music on, leaving the rest of the drive space unallocated.

It means wasting the balance of space on the drive, but it's better than not having one! ---
