OK all
I need to do this, but for the life of me cannot see any way in my 58 90 to get a hand near the pipe at the tank end - I've been under, behind and from the side. I can't even see the pipe end with a bright light, so how Blackwolf managed this... So any advice before I drop the tank down? I need to replace the breather on my '58 90, I've read and re-read the sticky post but for the life of me cannot see any way to get a hand near the pipe at the tank end, been all around tank with a torch and can barely see the pipe, can get hand over/under to it - is the "hand-job" approach just a possibility in a 110 and not a 90? So it looks like I will need to drop the tank (a bit), I've looked this up on the workshop manual, which makes it sound very easy (but previously I've found workshop ease to be inversely proportional to degree of swearing). Again I've read and re-read the sticky and people seem to have mixed experiences on possibility/practicality/ease of doing this - all bolts out, support tank and shield, push forward, lower down and it may/may not move! So any 90-specific advice on how best to replace my leaking pipe, it has been leaking for a while but recently had to swap fuel filter (starvation issues) and the crud that came out Stay safe all in these strange times R 2.4TDCI 90 - everyday brilliance S3 V8 Lightweight - in the garage being ignored #newchassistime S3 lightweight - 2nd car 24V fire risk with a full tilt and the windscreen down S1 80" - first car fun - 75mph in neutral downhill once #wobblesallround |

Regretfully that seems to be the case. Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

I struggled and struggled and even struggled a bit more. Loads of cuts on my hands loads of swearing, many disgusted neighbours, bad back and neck, 6kg of crap in my eyes, and after required about 6 pints and a bottle of wine, but it is doable. Oh and I still worried if I had done it properly for at least a week after. But it is possible.
So drop the tank |

It is definitely possible on a 110 (and I have big, and now scarred, hands too)! Having subsequently had to drop the tank to replace the fuel pick-up, I have to say dropping the tank is easier than you would think and much less painful. I'd probably drop the tank next time. |

Hello Minch90
You are right there is a range of experience when faced with this from owning a 90 to owning a 110 So for you and most 90 owners its out with the tank (almost certainly) My how I fixed it story is linked in the previous thread direction but here it is directly... https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic25866.html Good Luck SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Ok - bit of thread revival, but I am going to have to sort my breather pipe out. Whilst it has not split, it has gone very soft (suspect it has been done previously at some point) 2008 Puma 90. It is prone to collapsing and it feels
Added complications are that I have to LR tow bar with the braces. I have pondered for a few weeks now, but my OCD is getting the better of me!. Options...... 1. Pay to have it done - not going to happen unless it defeats me. 2. Cut a hole in the floor - very, very last resort. 3. Follow S4XKP's solution - a strong maybe. 4. Buy YRM aluminium guard/cradle and just cut the old one out - Plan A. So, guard ordered today - will post pic's of the ordeal. Rgds. Chris |

I'm thinking that the cut a hole solution is actually an enhancement over doing the the job "properly. The only thing I'd do differently is fit a hinge and T key lock to the top piece of metal and make it into an access/inspection port. Can't say the idea is actually mine. I have exactly this arrangement on my ATMP and it works a treat. It is actually the only way to access the fuel tank for filling! Going one stage further the whole floor panel could come out and be fixed back in as a deck/hatch arrangement. Again, I'd see that as an enhancement totally in keeping with the underlying design philosophy of the vehicle. |
