Have you never filled the tank? If you read back through the posts there are some photos, but the breather pipe was fitted in a position that puts it below the level of fuel in the tank when full. Thus it's possible to get fuel left in it when you run the fuel down. It can then either vent under over/under pressure or leak from a joint or perished hose. |

if you look under and any part of the line has cracks in it, then change it, mine had cracks in by the top of the filler hose, when I got it out there was no cracks so to speak by the tank, but there was a bend in the tube that had cracks, and was basically split so new tube needed. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

After 13 years and just in my vacations the breather pipe start to leak when the tank is filled, doing a "small" puddle in the gas stations if I filled it completely. Looks like an easy repair at the begining but as this old post said will be a pain in the ass to disconnect the pipe from the tank side. My have a crack just in the middle of the pipe. Well

On the 2008 Puma I extended the fuel tank breather to the bulkhead. This will stop leaking if you fill up with a wonky breather but will not solve the cracking issue.I left the 2011 2.4 as standard and so far I have no issues with either of them. Compared to earlier designs it is a bad design. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Many Thanks to all that have contributed to this thread it's been invaluable.
I've just spent a few days replacing the perished pipes on my 2007 110 TDCI. The tank is the same arrangement as the picture below. Unfortunately mine had a floor. Click image to enlarge The hose next to the main fill line was starting to crack and had splits at both connections and one in the middle that hadn't went all the way through. I ordered a replacement 19mm ID pipe and set about replacing it, getting it off was relatively easy although access is limited. Refitting the new pipe was difficult due to the limited access and after a few hours of failure, trying hot water, stretching the pipe with a 19mm socket. I gave up and got up early the next day and fitted it. Securing the jubilee clip required a flexi drive and was fairly straightforward. If I ever have to do this again I'll go for a bigger ID hose to make fitting to the tank easier. The breather pipe on the passenger side was in 3 bits. The access is shocking, the original pipe I ordered didn't fit and my local parts place only had 10mm ID hose. Removing the original clamp fitting was difficult and only really achieved when I tried it with a really long thin flathead screwdriver. I couldn't use the original fitting so had to use a small jubilee clip. Fitting the pipe was easy due to the larger diameter but tightening the jubilee clip was horrendous due to the even worse access but after many many attempts I managed it using the flexi drive. Several times during this I contemplated cutting a hole in the floor. I was reluctant to drop the tank due to lack of experience. Taking the Mud Flaps off was really helpful. One thing I did notice when sourcing replacement hoses, some of them although rated for diesel and petrol there were a few that weren't suitable for biofuels. Just wondering if the addition of vegetable oil and biodiesel into standard diesels is part of the problem with rubber perishing? This appears to be a common issue. As a quick fix the excellent Foley’s East Africa cut out the split breather, inserted a new piece and braced the whole thing up leith a couple of cable ties. Cost very little in time or money to do and saved dropping the fuel tank. It’s survived miles on corrugated tracks and I suspect this temporary job will outlast my ownership!

I need to replace the breather on my 2011 90.
Why is it so hard to remove the fuel tank? I was looking at mine today and once I’ve removed the bolts, dropped the anti roll bar and disconnected the towing supports; it looks like I might have just enough room to push the guard to the left and then pry the guard down to the right. Failing that, I was thinking I could use a sash clamp in reverse to push the brackets holding the guard in place apart just wide enough to squeeze it down. I’m sure far greater minds than me have considered this, so wanted to check that I’m not missing something / this approach hasn’t already been tried and failed. 2011 CSW XS 90 |

You have been directed towards my experience of this issue… (thank you Cragster69) There is a way to remove a 90’s Fuel Tank to replace the Breather Pipe, but having seen it done at a independent Landrover specialist, with a length of swagged scaffolding pipe it’s on the edge of madness… getting it out with force is the easier side of the operation flexing it back in just looks wrong. All of this in my view has to be undertaken whilst standing up under a vehicle on a lift ramp. I think from other observations on D2N there are a variety of experiences in changing a Breather Pipe, particularly on a 90, some manage to drop the tank just enough on the filler side to get in a swap over the Pipe. I think also there is a differing degree of tolerances involved (understandable on a hand built vehicle) mine I’m convinced was not even close to being manoeuvred in to an exit position. My work around isn’t for everyone but it worked well. A non problem for a 110 having easily removed the tank on my wife’s Defender, same applies to the 130 but the 90 is in my view is compromised for the almost inevitable failure of the Fuel Breather Pipe.
