Oh, and my son is now stuck in the Dominican Republic because Germany has closed its borders 
He was helping my aunt in hospital who fell ill there with pneumonia

I hope you don't lose out? I imagine from what you are saying that your work doesn't support paid time off for this?

I get my regular hours covered but obviously I cant do overtime or standby.
I do worry about falling over or something and nobody knowing...  2011 110 USW

Here's a thought as to how quickly things changed, & people started to realize how VERY serious this issue is.
Spudfan put up his original post on 26/1,.....but not much comment following it (including from me), so as I reckoned it was VERY serious, on 7/3 I put my comment up, because from what was happening in Aussie, I could very clearly see the spread, and now, here we are, just 11 days later, see the number of posts, and how this insidious disease is spreading. Yep, in Aussie, we have the same greedy, selfish people grabbing all manner of stuff off shelves, as a consequence of which others miss out. Elderly people & pensioners are being offered the opportunity to shop between 7 & 8 am, but the queues are massive, & invariably the shelves are empty. The real worry is, that the number of infections is still increasing world wide, and until that situation is reversed, nobody knows where we will all end up. I myself am probably older than most on here, & I'm retired, so I've decided that my best option is self isolation, & by that I mean, I will just keep within the boundaries of my property, to try to refrain from contact with others. Many many Events have been cancelled in Aussie, Car Club meetings, displays etc, sporting events, restaurants, cafes, movie theaters, air travel bookings almost zero, & severe travel restrictions,.....but the numbers are still rising. I saw a photo on (I think) the BBC News website of Australians buying toilet rolls, and after estimating the number of rolls in each of their trolleys I calculated that at the rate I use toilet rolls the number in each trolley would last me between thirty and forty years! Even if they had large families of say ten arseholes each, it should still be enough for 3 to 4 years. There appeared to be nothing except toilet rolls in their trolleys.
I simply don't understand why toilet paper is at the top of the lost for these people. I wouldn't want to run out (although this is looking increasingly likely due to the selfish behaviour of so many people), but I am more concerned about having food to eat than toilet paper to deal with the by-products. The pasta fixation baffles me too. These are indeed very strange and unsettling times! |

It's sheep mentality - if one person sees another hoarding toilet rolls they assume they need to as well (no neuronal activity required). It's the basis of almost all social networking sites (especially the "influencers")

When I put up my original post it was not as a denegration of the impact that the virus could have. It was just another take on it. From the earliest times worries began to set in with my wife and I owing to the possible effect it could have on our daughter. Even, when I come home from work I spend my evenings in the kitchen and have moved into a spare bedroom as our other daughter is away at college. I am considering putting in for special leave to minimise my catching the virus and then passing it on to my daughter. Today I developed a sore throat but as far as I am aware that is not one of the symptoms.
I was talking to another parent who has two children in the autistic spectrum, one in remission from cancer, who says that as all activities and services have been cancelled the change in routine is having a chaotic effect in their household. So long as both my wife and I an stay healthy we can ride this out. We do not have a mortgage or a car loan so we do not have that type of worry. We have other worries. If things get bad and the health system gets over run patients will be prioritised. Some one like my daughter might be far down the list. If infected she would need a lot of help and if resources have to be allocated to those with the best chance of survival there would not be the time, staff or resources to go to people like my daughter. This is uncharted territory for a lot of people. Even when the virus has run it's course it will take a long time for things to get back to "normal". I hope we can all stay safe and healthy. My daughter who is 24 still hugs and kisses me morning, noon and night and it is soul destroying trying to put the brakes on that. Like I said I wish everybody well and anyone that is alone keep in touch with the thread and use it occasionally to blow off a little steam if need be. As Blackwolf has already said about toilet paper.... Why?
When we were younger if we run out of toilet paper our mother wouldn't go to the local shop, she said it was too expensive. We would have to wait until she went into town.She used to cut up old newspapers and if we were lucky she would use a skewer to make holes in it, thread some string through them and tie them to the toilet roll holder.  |

I think the toilet paper is for people who already have the virus - they wrap it round themselves and stagger about so they can look how they feel

Logically it will take a while for the social distancing / isolation measures to have an impact on the number of people catching the virus. We won’t know that in the UK because unless you present at hospital you won’t be tested. We are currently testing about 5000 people per day. We aren’t tracing the source of infections any longer, so no more identifying super spreaders etc. The true number of infections in the UK is therefore impossible to determine or indeed guess at with any confidence. The fact people can be asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms makes it even more difficult to know the true numbers. Perhaps when this is over we will all be tested as part of routine med checks to see whether we need a vaccine.
