Put your finger on the fuel pump relay while cranking.
If it vibrates you need a new battery. How old is your battery? |

Battery is 2 years old and lives on trickle charge when not in use.
Fuel pump sounds like its running fine. A single click when the ignition is switched on. |

Yes a faulty crank sensor would stop a Td5 starting. And it’s easy to change. Some have a spacer, others don’t. So keep an eye out for it.

A little bit of research says you can test the resistance of the crank sensor at the ecu end although its doesnt say which pins, one is the shielded wire however im not sure what other wire/pin to check across.
My car has a leak out the back of the valve cover gasket so maybe theres oil in the crank sensor plug. Just watched this |

Just tried my spare crank sensor. There was lots of oil around the plug and the sensor so i gave it a good bath in brake cleaner. Checked the reisitance of the new and the old, both reading 1.25kohm as thy are supposed to. Checked the red plug at the ecu end, also reading 1.25kohm that seems ok... whats next?
EDIT: Have now run a couple of fuel pump purge cycles, no difference, no noise of bubbles or air in the system either. Also checked dipstick level and gave it a good sniff to see if theres diesel contamination in the oil and it seemed fine. |

Still continuing to diagnose this, today I tried a fuel pressure gauge into the hole of the fuel temperature sensor into the side of the fuel pressure regulator to test the pressure of my fuel pump.
I got 4 bar at the FPR which I believe is about right. Just waiting for the 20th person in the nanocom group buy then that will be the next step. Click image to enlarge |

Are you sure you have not messed a wire in the dash to the ignition? Other than that I have no advice to offer for your non start issue but couldn’t resist a comment... must be something about Defender owners and dual sport BMW motos ???

I have just pulled the top half of the dash out again today to check this and I can’t see any snags in any wiring when I put it back and gave it another crank. Same thing. And the car did run fine for 20 minutes immediately after the stereo was installed.
Things I need to check when I eventually get a nanocom are if the ecu is getting its crank sensor reading and to see if the car is immobilised. However I did read a forum thread about someone with a faulty 10as that wasn’t showing up in nanocom. Ahh yes the bike is the daily and the landy is the summer toy.... I know that makes no sense to most people |

So the nanocom ariived today!
Only fault code is 1.8 Manifold pressure circuit. (Low Pressure) Vehicle is showing as not immobilised No rpm is being registered when cranking.... So this is the fault. I have 2 genuine crank sensors. Both showing the correct resistance at the red ecu plug at pins 13 and 36. Any ideas? New ECU in case its not reading the signal? OR is there a possibility the pins in the plug arent making good contact |

What does the nanocom say is the voltage at the ecu? If that is below 9V while cranking the engine the ecu will not send signals to your injectors. Roel

Getting between 10.07 and 10.5V on cranking
As i said in the last post surely the problem is its reading 0rpm? |

Update: Ordered a used NNN ecu and a brand new crank sensor (intermotor branded) The other 2 were genuine lr but both used.
If i dont need the ECU i can re sell and it wont hurt to have another crank sensor. I do have a question for the forum in the meantime: Pin 16 of the red plug.... A16 - CKP Sensor screened earth Excuse my ignorance but what does it do and how can i check it? Ive been checking my crank sensor wiring from the positive and the negative, pin 13 and 36 but i havent been checking this screened earth. Should i be able to continuity check it to any earthing point or battery neg? Or am i getting this wrong |

see if martin can make you new screen crank sender lead. had one read induct voltage [ bad screen ] new lead in place ecu reading rpm
screen only to ecu plug end |
