It’s not just you, twice in the last fortnight I have waited in all day for my utility company to come and make their “mandatory” Annyal FIT meter Verification reading by a human. First time they told me the meter reader definitely called but there was nobody in - I told them impossible as I stayed in all day to paint my living room, another call was booked for yesterday and again nobody came but I did get an email saying the meter reader had been delayed and would call first thing thus morning.......... now 2:15pm and I had a text message telling me the meter reader will be here between 3pm and 6pm......... good job I’m now retired and don’t have to take days off work to let the meter reader in, but I hate this immediate accusation that it is always the customers fault - same happens whenever Hermes has to make a delivery to the house “oh you weren’t at home so we took it back to the depot “ I have 5vneighbours all of whom are retired and at home all day long that packages can be left with and that is the alternative delivery instruction - I’m 120 miles round trip from the Hermes depot! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

No it's not you. It happens to me all the time. I immediately put them in my little black book and never deal with them again. You did right to tell them to stick the job. Defender 90XS SW

Don’t get me started on this one 👹

Wanted a full en-suite ripped out and replaced, the whole job, supplying the parts painting the whole deal,
So in my books it would be Defoe a worthwhilst job to quote / take on

We rang and spoke to TEN companies in the end !! Only two actually bothered to arrive for there appointment and only one offered a quote !,,,

I just don’t get it Neutral

Definitely not you.
Not many people really care about providing a good service anymore.

I went into M&S this morning in Ashbourne early on - I fancied some croissants for breakfast.
The baker had rung in ill and NO ONE else could prepare the fresh bread etc for the entire store ; therefore no sales today.
Not sure what is happening tomorrow...........

It's incredible. Our business has become quite successful due to our unique position of turning up when we say we will, doing the job we're paid to do very well and being courteous and caring at all times. Baffles me when I hear my clients experiences with other firms! Rolling Eyes

We have a local gas / heating chap who employs a retired fella to take his calls and book his appointments - result is that said gas chappie is kept fully occupied with bookings, turns up on time and doesn’t spend half his time in your house answering his mobile for incoming calls etc

He works quicker, his calls get answered elsewhere and, as a result, he’s super busy (and much recommended...)

By contrast, I rang a company the other day for an indicative cost for 150-200 units of a product. Two possible options at £15k or £35k per unit and the suggestion was that as we were ‘over the 100’ that the more expensive option would be the best... So, forgive my basic maths, but at ‘worst case’ of 200 x £35k the deal could be worth £7m... I’ll put that in numbers in case it reads any different... £7,000,000!

Now, I fully appreciate that this was an early-stage enquiry and could well have gone nowhere, but the chap didn’t even bother to ask for any contact details....! Follow-up?

That’ll be unlikely...

The best I have had twice from the same company named after a rain Forrest is a Text "unable to deliver no reply from delivery address" time stamped 23.59hrs. now which delivery driver is going to be out at that time of night. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

As echoed above, I was a one man band self employed gardener, just basic stuff, cutting grass, hedges and tidy ups,
I only ever placed one 50p advert in our local shop and very soon I was flat out, all through word of mouth
I think mainly as I worked hard, turned up when I said I would , I was polite and happy to drink there Tea after I was finished Thumbs Up
Some of my more elderly customers I think would of been happy to pay me to chat and drink tea with let alone do there gardens Laughing
Only time I would “let them down” was due to weather conditions, but I would explain that on my initial visit, and call them before hand to notify and Reebok them, was never a problem as gardens weren’t as urgent as a burst pipe etc,

But none of my above comments are rocket science, just basic business sense and being polite
Seems many companies are missing that one big time Rolling Eyes

Doing a bit of family history research, my wife was looking in a newspaper from 1911. She spotted a report of a meeting of the Institute of Plumbing, my professional body, and then only five years old.

They were up in arms because someone had written a book in which he had said he would "sooner have a burglar in his house than a plumber".

Clearly nothing much has changed in the intervening 109 years!

I endeavour not to conform to the sterotype of course.

You're definitely in the right here

You're the client / Clients Representative you have every right to cancel if they cannot deliver. You have a job to do to get someone to provide an alarm for a school. if they cannot deliver what was agreed then they have broken a contract, even if it is a verbal agreement. The terms were that they provide the alarm on that day, and that you would pay the quoted price.

Having broken this agreement or contract they have nullified it and you are within your legal rights to cancel.

I'd phone them up, be frank and confront them, tell them if they can't provide a service on an agreed date then they shouldn't agree to take on or quote for that project. Also tell them that as the schools representative on these matters they should not go and subvert your authority by going to someone who cannot deal with it, and state that you're not going to use them in future, not recommend them, and in fact you will talk to other people in your position about this. I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/
