I understand that you were low on oil and there are other things top of your list, but just for your info, not long into Tdci ownership I was sure I had piston slap, or big ends gone. After a lot of worry and research I found out it was the VCV had failed, and required replacement.

When you say pulling back did the oil light come on? the oil light indicates oil pressure, the tdci takes about 7 litres and is designed for 45 degree angles, I expect the oil could be quite low before the pick up point is out of the oil. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Variable Control Valve.
It’s a very small and delicate little valve that is easily changed on the front of the Tdci engine that controls the amount of fuel. |

a long shot but funnily rear demister stopped working at same time, this was all after garage fitted new front wiper stuff cos wipers wouldnt work properly, only saying this as odd things have things like fuses in common, although rear demister light still comes on on the dash - just a long shot but oil light deffo not come on at any time

Strictly it is "volume control valve", it regulates the flow of fuel from the LP stage of the fuel pump to the HP stage and by doing so effectively determines the fuel pressure in the common rail. It is delicate, and a common cause of problems which usually do not produce DTCs due to a lack of monitoring. In fact a VCV fault is usually diagnosable by the absence of DTCs. |
