Is engine cranking over
 with starter motor
start by checking the battery terminal and neg down to chassis and to transfer box next fuse see below next relays i.e. starter - fuel pump - main relay MY 1999 to 2001 relay driver seat box ( MY1999 rave ) working from foot well end first yellow relay cooling fan next one yellow relay compresses clutch A/C next one black relay Glow plugs next one black relay ABS return pump next one yellow relay ( main ) canter box fuse box ( MY1999 rave ) working from passenger side first yellow relay starter next yellow relay heated rear screen next yellow relay head lamp next brown relay sounder alarm next green relay fuel pump also ecu delay windscreen wiper unit brown / relay hazed warning black  Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Last edited by dorsetsmith on 18th Feb 2020 10:50am. The solenoid on the starter has failed. Very common problem. Either new starter or fit parts to solenoid. You could also take starter off and take to have rebuilt if it’s a quality make. Repetitively flicking through key may get it to start occasionally, or a tow.
Also check you FPR (fuel pressure return) valve, which is on side of cylinder head above starter and can drip diesel on to starter that then causes the solenoid to fail. Andy. |

Back home now and been doing some routing around and couldnt find any obvious problems, have flickered the key a bit and managed to get it started, turned off ignition and tried again and started first time perfectly, so I'm guessing it is the starter solenoid as landyandy mentioned?

Watched this video earlier, looks simple enough, how hard is it to remove from a defender though, access doesnt look good from what i can see, anyone done theirs recently and got any tips?

One fixing is a PITA, just take your time. Remember to disconnect the battery first?

The starter is ok to remove but there is one hidden nut, and it’s an odd size. Can’t remember what size though, been a while since I’ve done it. Don’t go cheap with the replacement

The repair kit can be fitted to the starter whilst it’s still in place I’ve done it loads of times. As above make sure you disconnect the battery.Remove front cover 3bolts 8mm socket. Pull out plunger and spring, undo 2 m8 nuts for contacts and remove contacts.Fit new contacts,Leave both new contacts loose and push the plunger in to set the contacts level, then nip up the contacts. If their not set level they’ll burn out quicker. Fit spring and plunger refit front cover. Can be done in less than half an hour

15mm if can use 6 point socket

Would of loved to come on here and say job done... however thats not the case
2 bolts i got off from underneath no problem at all, the nut at the top though a real PITA! How on earth can you get good access to it?! I removed the hose in the way to get a better look but could barely even get the socket but to fit on it let alone the socket extension! Then it started to p**s down with rain! So i gave up! Mechanically I am a novice too, probably doesnt help! |

From memory I've done it from above with an 18" extension in the past. When It's light tomorrow I'll have a look and refresh my memory!
