Limp mode & Speedometer occationally going nuts
Hi! This is my first post here. I hope you can help.

I've bought myself a 2007 defender Puma 90 and love it so far.
It's my first defender and I'm starting to get to know its quirks. One of the problems I can't sort out is this:

Occasionally the speedometer either stops working while I'm driving or the needle jumps up and down like it's a bad connection or something. At the same time the car seems to go in some kind of limp mode and looses power. Stopping the car, turning the ignition off and back on again, seems to temporarily solve the problem. Today it disappeared after one restart. Earlier I've had to restart up to three times before the problem disappeared again.

I suspect some kind of bad connection or moisture somewhere and It seems to come back if I park the car outside in the rain for longer periods.

Any suggestions what to search for?

Welcome to the forum and hope that you find the info on here useful!

I had a similar problem with my 2.4 110 - check the relays under the Right hand seat for tightness - mine was a loose relay that had been causing issues for a few weeks but caused me to grind to a halt one day .. A recovery mechanic was called and took less than one minute to diagnose and fix!

Hope that helps and is the only problem

Mine did the same & it was the connection on the transfer box for the speed sensor, removed, cleaned and reseated & all good since.

Thanks! I had a look at the relays yesterday, took them all out and reseated them after a quick "wash" with an elecronic cleaner spray. Where do I locate the speed sensor? Is it easy to get to?

Underneath, on the back face of the transfer box, slightly above and behind the handbrake drum.

On your back from underneath, I can do it and I'm (allegedly) fat! Rolling with laughter

I removed the cubby box to get access to it. You must be an octopus to get to the sensor from underneath the car? 😁
I tried to clean the speed transducer and the contact with electronic cleaner spray and my speedometer now died. Guess I found the problem then and will buy a new sensor to see if that fixes the problem 😊

I had this. The engine reduces power when it thinks the vehicles stationary, presumably to stop someone over revving it. Broken wire near plug to speed sensor easily accessed from underneath. Easy fix but pain in the arse to drive around for the couple of weeks before i was able to investigate.

Mine was a poor or dirty connection a few weeks after first clutch change, pulled off the road, got under car wiggled connection and all was back to normal.
Good luck

I just tried to clean it up again, and now it works.
The speedometer works again, but the other reason why I started to search for sensor problems remains:
The engine is not running well between 1500-2000 rpms. It seems like it does not get the fuel it needs for brief moments or some kind of limp mode kicks in erratically (on/off at a fast pace) - Excuse my English, I can't find the right words.

I just cleaned the MAF and MAP sensors and feel that I got more power in general and smoother running, except for the problem between 1500-2000rpms.
The engine seems to run fine at other rpms for the moment.

Any idea what to search for next?
I'll change the speed transducer when I get a new one to make sure it's 100%.

Update:

A new speed sensor seems to have solved the speedo problem.

BG 245 diesel fuel system cleaner seems to have solved the problem between 1500-2000rpms Smile
