I had mine just cut out as driving along, all power lost, dials all drop everything off. Then a second later it all turns on... or I just turn the key,

It would do it 3 times in a 10 mile journey or once over a 1000 miles,. No codes showed up.


Simple fix for me was a new key barrel.



Your right though cutting out dead as you go passed a truck on a motorway is no something I look forward to Sad

I had this for two years before finding it was the MAF sensor. If you simply un-plug it it will run, and if the problem stops then its the MAF sensor. Mines been fine for 3 years after replacement, best do a pump reset and injector learn as well.

Also does not come up with any codes. 2008 Defender 110 XS CSW

Ive had the same issue, turned out it was the injector harness plug, water had gotten in and damaged the pins, try starting the engine and while running give the plugs a wobble with your fingers and thats when mine would cut out so when driving if i hit a little bump or something that shifted the plug it would conk out, replaced that and its sorted now.

Took ages to figure it out, sometimes i would drive a 10 mile trip and it would die 6 times within the first mile but then be fine the rest of the journey, other times it wouldnt die once, wound up was an understatement!

UPDATE:

The issue is still occurring. Evil or Very Mad

I took the Landy to a very good local independent specialist who couldn't find any fault codes plus told me it WASNT the VCV or fuel sensor. He cleaned all electrical parts and it ran well for a period of 2 weeks, however the symptoms happened again this morning:

In a 10 min journey this morning it died 3 times but each time in a slightly different way.

1. Slowing down to allow an oncoming car to pass me. Landy stuttered and died. First warning light to come on just before it died was the Oil. Started immediately at first attempt.

2. At set of traffic lights car was mildly hunting at idle. Went to pull off, lost drive and then lurched aggressively forwards as drive kicked in.

3. When at Costa Drive through (!) car cut out when at idle. Again the Oil light was the first warning light to glow. Car started with no issues at first attempt.

Worth noting the car was cold but symptoms have happened before when car is warm.

Any thoughts?

Ok, quite a few folk have said VCV based on their experience. How did the indie dismiss the VCV so easily?

Based on his experience, when a VCV 'goes, it goes' - i.e. it wont show up so sporadically. I can go 500 miles with no issues and then 3 occur within a 10 min journey.

You can get Denso branded for about £60 and unbranded for about £30
You can change yourself - only issue is awkward to access the bolts - there is full thread on here with pics on how to do it and the tool - ratchet wrench with extensions/universal joint


Does the ECU need to be re-programmed when the VCV is replaced ?

As said before, ignition switch can cause this issue. Tried all sorts of fixes, but new switch and no more problems. 80" 1948

So I've had the VCV replaced (Denzo) but the problem persists. Big Cry

So my issue turned out to be due to a fault in the Common Rail Pump which was replaced and the problem seems to have gone away. I have run it a few days now without the engine cutting out on me Thumbs Up
