Hi All
Having replaced 99% of my drivetrain , I’m still getting an unpleasant reverberating through the vehicle, in all gears , at any speed , neutral or in drive . I’m eliminating everything bit by bit , I will be replacing all bushes shortly although they are all quite new anyway ! But we’re Britpart Poly My question is , when you have a wheel jacked up and spin it , how much of a revolution do you get once you’ve stopped applying force ? Mine stop pretty much immediately regardless of how much “oomph” I give it , it doesn’t seem normal to me . I have an Ashcroft ATB in the transfer box and I’m wondering if this is a symptom of the system or whether something has gone awry . Thank you , I’m really clutching at straws now !
It does appear that all four brakes are scuffing the discs, one corner is mildly worse than the others. Is that normal ?! What I really need is another defender parked up along side that I can compare !! https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |

Is the reverberation in sync with engine RPM or road speed?

Vibration at all speeds even noticeable in 1st gear , worse once been driving for a while and all warmed up . Also whilst coasting in neutral. Vibration is probably the wrong word , it’s more of a Pulsing reverberating Standard gearbox with new transfer box and ATB fitted . 2.4tdci Here’s a list of what I’ve replaced to try and eliminate it , whilst also upgrading New Gwynn Lewis HD propshafts (make it a lot worse, no idea why) now removed. New Ashcroft transfer box with ATB Front Diff Rear Diff Front driveshafts, Cv’s and flanges Rear driveshafts , one piece All bearings New brake pads New transfer box mounts Fitted maybe a year ago before problem arose : New Poly Bushes all round New Bilstein Shocks New OEM springs Recon PAS box A-frame ball joint The only lead I have is that all four brakes appear to be dragging slightly , not by much at all and the hubs are all cool to the touch after a good drive. OK but is the vibration in road-speed or engine-speed related?

100% road speed, hence it does it whilst coasting in neutral .
It becomes progressively more noticeable the faster you go , by 60mph it feels very unpleasant but doesn't make the entrire truck shake violently, you can feel it through the floor and a resonating from the rear but in my experience that could be originating anywhere . Once you get up to those speeds, it can also be felt through the steering wheel and gearstick but I would say the floor is the most obvious . https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |

OK have you tried changing wheels and tyres (just for a test drive)?
I've had a little bit of a vibration but only really noticeable at 60+ because a wheel is very slightly out of shape. If it's not vibrating the steering wheel then I would hazard its likely to be rear end related if downstream of suspension. Have you checked the simple stuff like wheel bearings, tyre pressures and diff oils? When did it start? With one of the bits you've changed? Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

If you knock the transfer box into neutral and it still does it then that eliminates half the transfer box as well. Ed

I’ve swapped wheels front to back , made no difference . Tyre pressures are all checked Diff oils were changed when diffs were swapped . The problem has sort of crept up on me and got progressively worse . A mechanic friend suggested I therefore drive it until something breaks , bad advice I feel ! Two other mild symptoms I get but may be unrelated . When I floor it and release the accelerator, it feels as though it momentarily speeds up , like a power surge . Equally when I dab the brake firmly it feels like I’m being pushed from behind, again like a surge . That along with the HD props making things worse makes me think it could be an item that carries momentum, such as a flywheel but my mechanical knowledge at this depth becomes patchy . A couple of weeks ago I got a waft of what smelt like a burning clutch whilst cruising at 60mph but it was only replaced around 8000 miles ago . https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |

Don’t know about the puma defenders but the dual mass flywheel fitted to td5 can give some problems with vibrations on over run and acceleration.
Do you ever have difficulty selecting gears? |

Since you've changed so much I'd be looking at removing bits to see what makes it go away. First thing that might help is remove each prop in turn and lock the centre diff and test. That might at least narrow it down to front/rear if indeed it is a drive-line issue. Something that I hadn't mentioned - you've checked everything's attached such as the exhaust? You don't have any holes in the exhaust?
If your brakes are binding I'd expect the discs to be roasting hot after a good run. Anyway of disabling the ABS on a Puma to see whether it might be a sensor misbehaving? Not being used to all this electrickery on a Defender but have you had the codes read - just in case something's actually showing up? If the burning clutch disappeared more than likely it was something outside - as you're listening / feeling / smelling for something you normally become more sensitive to external smells etc., always happens with me and a few miles later is disappears and the Defender keeps plodding along.
