Weird noise.
I changed to fully synthetic oil and filter recently and i have noticed a really noticable "crack" when the engine fires up and also when i switch it off, it sounds loud and the engine runs great. Any ideas? 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

"Willie, you seem to think it is in the spirit of this forum to try and take the Censored ... just let it go?"

Keep em coming if you want, all i did was make a joke about you leaving for your prefered car, certainly didn't invite you to PM me.

Fook off you Yorkshire Censored would have been a better reply anyway. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

I think its your clutch in its death throws. Same symptoms as mine had. The latest version seems to have fixed the problem.

Got a booking on Wednesday in Morrisons to check clutch and report back. My Defender was in the range which had a standard Ford clutch in it and i will be pushing for a part payment from LR as i have only done 15k miles. I believe they are on their 3rd fix? Any info would be most helpful.
Thanks. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Has anyone here actually had a clutch fail completely? Mine is rattling a lot and I don't know how urgent a repair it is. What actually happens if "the springs fall out", which is what I am told will happen, when the vehicle is in use?

I am currently doing about 800 miles a week and don't really have time to get the clutch changed; am I going to regret this?

Mine on both failures just rattled,I did about 200km on the last one before the dealer said o.k. I doubt it would fail compleatly as the springs are partly enclosed, but I don't know what damage they may cause the rest of the transmission as they act as a shock absorber during clutch actuation. Mine is the latest update and I have put it through hell, fully loaded, boat in tow in northern western australia on horrer tracks and no problems. Just make sure that you get the latest update if you pay for it or they do. It's a changed vehicle with this clutch.

My springs fell out on the last Puma, interesting drive back from Scotland, some times you could dip the clutch and sometimes not Shocked Springs were well chewed up when we stripped it. So the answer is sooner rather than later. If you search there are some photos, possibly in AndrewS's galleries. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

It goes away when clutch de-pressed and do you think LR will wear it as it is now 3 years old and out of warranty BUT i have done 15k gently and the first Defenders were fitted with a weak pressure plate?
How much for a new clutch from a LR outlet or an Indy?
Thanks. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I doubt it. An owner over here had to fight long and hard to get it fixed under warranty after 60000km. Your only hope I think is if you reported the noise when it was under warranty or you can show proof that it's a well known fault. They have brought out two changes to this clutch so maybe. In Australia they charge about $1500 at the dealer so good luck with L.R.
