Bloody hell its all doom and gloom on here...... you don’t like change.
How about we see what they have come up with? They have not suddenly forgotten after 70 years of building amazing off road vehicles. Yes it will be different, it has to be but let’s keep an open mind! |

^ I’m with you boxoftricks, until we have seen it, sat in it, driven it, it’s difficult to form an opinion, I’m sure it won’t be to everyone’s taste but neither is a Defender it’s a marmite car you either love it or hate it and the new one won’t be any different I’m sure when it comes to divided opinions 2015 HT XS 90

Yes I agree Sulisuli , a Defender is a marmite car , you love it or hate it .
But Land Rover as a brand is a marmite brand , globally it has an appalling reputation . A reputation for unreliability and to be honest arrogance . In the late 60s when a Land Rover was a Land Rover , the customers and dealers were crying out for more power reliability and road speed . How did they respond , twenty years too late when Toyota owned the global market . So here we are today , in a new century , still awaiting a replacement of a truly iconic vehicle , a distinctive vehicle , that created a brand of vehicles ! And they start talking crap , use words like premium . What is premium about our Defenders ? ?????? |

In 1948 the Rover Company was a manufacturer of quality (premium) vehicles such as the P4 range which was typically owned by well of folk and professional people. In the same year they launched a basic truck, the 80in Land Rover which was a huge success.
I hope that history repeats itself and the new Defender is launched with a basic truck option. Fine if they make it higher spec as well to suite the lifestyle folks but I’m sure that if they get the design/build quality right as well as a truck version with a price to match the Japanese Pickups they will have a success on their hands once again as they did 71 years ago. One can only hope. |

Yes and in 1978 they were making the SD1 and the series 3 , but you could buy
a cab chassis and build your own body or a factory wellside . Nothing premium here , but practical . So in this century we see rampant global Americanisation when it comes to global vehicle choice . People want double cab trucks , because they are practical . How do they make this truck on the Discovery 5 air suspended platform ? |

Have you seen what a Discovery can do? Outperform our little trucks off road with greater ground clearance! An evolution of that with some of the old Defender toughness and I think we’ll be in a great place. Unfortunately/fortunately some of the modern safety and environmental restraints have dictated the design process. |

Yes boxoftricks , I know what Discoveries are capable of off road , but there is
a lot of expensive complexities with these . My Disco 4 is very capable , not very tuneable though and has been very premium to keep going , with compressor renewal , control arm bushes failing quite regularly , egr faults , one piece plastic manifolds failing and of course these all involve the cost of main steelers diagnostics . Oh forgot cambelts , she is premium in the invoices department . So now Disco 5 , a very divisive vehicle , once again even more complex , aluminium architecture , I just wonder how they can make a one tonne pickup from this starting point ? |

Well, they managed to make a 1 ton pick up from the original incarnation and with over 70 years of automotive know how and even with Land Rovers appallingly slow product development I’d imagine that they will fill the gaps in the market that they want to compete in, this might not fit in with driving up a fire road to erect a new telegraph mast or it might not have a snow plow attachment for the once in every 10 years we get more than an inch of snow, these and carrying coffee tables around the country in the back are things that at only a tiny proportion of buyers ever care about ?
Most people who buy these vehicles don’t want a PTO or a snow plow On the front or a cherry picker on the back, for ordinary drivers they want to be able to have sat nav built in, hands free telephone and then be able to hear the person on the other end of the phone, They want the damp on the outside not on the inside, they want to have some arm room and leg room and also some degree of comfort afforded to their passengers. Thinking out of the box, would it not make more sense to have a separate forum for all the haters that have not seen the new Defender in the flesh, those that have not sat in it, driven it, driven cross country in it yet.
I would rather go back to the days of positivity and sharing of ideas instead of moaners going off of one based on a few pictures and videos and wanting a pickup that they have never owned. Let people experience the vehicle in their own way and work out how best it suits them for their day to day lives and finances. |

Deal,
But nobody can claim it's awesome until they have done all of the above too. 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |

why not call out the others who take over topics saying how the new defender is $hit, etc. instead of me. i'm actually looking to buy one in the future unlike a lot of others who are here to criticize and bash it.[/img]
