What happens to a monocoque chassis when you use a snatch strap to pull 2000kg of embedded vehicle out of a bog.
I use aluminiun foil for cooking fish. |

To be fair I was surprised at how heavily built my dads l322 Range Rover was built underneath being a monocoque chassis. It really didn’t look like it was lacking any strength. That said, things have got cheaper and lighter since then though

I know it’s not a pure monocoque but Land Rover seemed to make sure the Disco 3 was up to the riggers I f snatch recoveries. I’m sure the new Def will be having some similar tests done to it. There is no reason a monocoque can’t be made strong enough if needed.

I got rear ended in my D3 by a Berlingo van, I was going about 20mph and it was calculated that he was probably doing 50. The plastic rear bumper cracked but the massive steel beam behind it was up damaged. The Berlingo was stoved in up to the passenger compartment and the driver had quite bad injuries. I always felt that the D3/4 was probably one of the best passenger vehicles to be in if you got hit, always felt totally safe while driving it.

I used to have a 55 D3 and really liked itprob one of the best cars ive had on road and off rd the only prob i saw off rd was a puncture where the owner had to start it and keep it lifted till the wheel was changed as it was in a rut (in Wales with D3 guys).
Boxy, Rugged looking just comfortable and modern inside oh n quiet so if the new defender had its looks from the outside and they used parts from the D3 and D4 to keep this affodable I'd think it is to be expected as milesR3 said it's evolved |

There's a relatively well known story of an incident some years, involving a Discovery 3 and an Audi in a head on crash at motorway speeds in South Africa. The Audi was totally destroyed and the driver killed but the family of four in the D3 walked away with only minor injuries. The D3 and 4 are phenomenally strong vehicles. Darren

We have created a Vehicle that is tough capable and unstoppable , Ha Ha !!
The Defender has evolved . Who else has noticed a chunk of plastic has fallen off the Premium Durability Vehicle ?? Take a look on the Land Rover UK website , side on image . I wonder how much this piece of Premium Durability Plastic will cost to replace at our dealerships ?? |

Could this be the first rust resistant monocoque Defender No rotting chassis from new, no rotting hidden bare metal body cappings, no bubbling windscreens, door bottoms, floors sills, frames, brackets, fasteners, spigots... well everything really apart from the tyres. It will now only be the likes of the Disco chassis that rot from new.
Long term however, I would prefer the current Defender for off-road use against a monocoque shell. The advantage being parts can be treated, welded of replaced far easier than trying to save and weld up a rusting shell. I bet there won,t be any added rust prevention treatment on it similar to the rest of the range. Some marques like Mitsubishi are Dinitrolling new imports before they go onto the forecourts, a very good idea if done properly. |
