Belt pulleys play/noise clicking
Suggestions Please

There is an irregular, intermittent ticking/clicking noise at start up around the air conditioner compressor.
It sounds just like the following video posted by someone else on youtube

The noise on mine gets worse when turning on the air conditioning
A few people suggested that the noise is from below the a/c compressor so I removed the belt and found play and noise on the alternator and idler pulley. Does anyone think that this could be the source of the clicking?

Thanks in advance for your ideas
Dave

Hi there. I too had a horrendous noise on my 2.4 which was driving me mad. I traced it to the alternator drive pulley. It is designed to drive in one direction and spin freely in the other. Mine started to fail which caused it to clunk loudly which was most audible when shutting off the engine. These pulleys. Can be replaced but you need a special tool which runs about £30 from tool makers such as Laser. The pulley can be bought from a motor factor for about £35 and its likely listed for a Ford Transit. I don't have the part numbers to hand but did post them previously. A search should find them. Please don't swap out the entire alternator for the sake of the pulley 😀

I'm not saying that this will be the cure for all your noises but the alternator pulley shouldn't make any rattling or club's when in use. Hopefully someone will chip in with more opinions / help.

Regards as always.
