my def.....by Caterham
thought I'd take heed of whats been said before - something along the lines of me moaning about my def and going off topic on others threads.

My defender being the right place for 'ramblings' about my defender so here goes;

so just to let you know that I had a cairns blue 07 110 xs but didn't keep it too long in part due to the various problems so a little while later as a kind of 40th birthday present - hello R500YEL in grey.

pre PDI I noted what I deemed to be very poor panel fit to the rear which was sorted prior to my collecting it
Post collection it went back two or three more times for water leaks one of which was the result of the rear floor not having a seal fitted.
Driving off down the road and it's kangaroo 'd for no obvious reason ?? Back a month or two later for a new ECM. Carpets around seats trashed in the process so new carpets supplied and I re-fitted.
Rear o/s door rubbing on rubber seal and worn out by 'kicker' for interior light switch due to poor fitting door. Instead of re-fitting door as requested kicker simply bent back (and made loose in the process)
Back for a new front passenger door and painting of rear seats hinges as the paint was falling off the hinges and the door was bent.
By 6 months paint was dropping off all of the seat frames and hence they were all replaced.
Back to have the bulkhead repaired for corrosion.
Door locking solenoids replaced.
Wiring repaired twice to rear door.
Couldn't turn windscreen wipers off - repaired and had to re-fit dash myself as it wasn't done right.
Extension shaft failed and replaced followed by two more return visits due to seals failing followed by a new gearbox.
turbo failed and replaced - scratched bulkhead during process so back to have that re-sprayed.

track rod end was partially seized and probably the cause of scrubbing to front tyres and occasional sense of understeer as it would suddenly move for a change? - steering rod and track rods replaced for HD versions.

always complained about intermittent performance / engine knock etc but always got the 'they're all like that'

well having made huge progress in the last couple of weeks it would appear they probably are 'all like that' if they have a loose battery earth and dodgy hi/lo range switch ! (blithering morons !)

and the 'tweeks'....

so just had the clutch replaced along with new extension shaft which going by how dry it was and the size of the pile of rust it never got to see any grease of any sort when it was replaced at 26k miles Evil or Very Mad blithering morons !

black powder coated steering guard,
DRL front bumper
colour coded mirrors
crystal headlights
LED side light bulbs
IRB 450 Nm upgrade Very Happy
sub woofer and head end
dynomat
rear bumperettes
Dinitrol
Thumbs Up

DRL bumper took a knock last night.

stupid woman did a kamikaze manoeuvre in front of me from turn right only lane into my lane where there clearly wasn't a gap!

Evil or Very Mad

doh! replacement end cap required. I think her list is going to be rather a lot longer. when will people learn to drive and stop assuming that cutting people up is completely acceptable. just because their front bumper is in front of yours it seems that they have the given right to cut you. the number of f'in clowns that have at the last minute decided they can just about accelerate and get a gnats whisker ahead of you before 2 lanes become that gives them the right to try and barge you off the road Evil or Very Mad

I suspect that's one person that just might think next time Evil or Very Mad Censored

so since the picos there's been a slight face lift - LED's upfront.

just before the picos ATB's in the rear and centre along with new clutch and gearbox.

and just today it's rocked up 100k miles and looking forward to many more adventures and the shopping list / to do list never goes away.

- drivers seat base needs replacing, numerous parts needing taking off and re-painting.....the list goes on new mirror arms and HD drive flanges on order......

please don't get me wrong I don't have a load of money burning a whole in my pocket but the def is approaching 10 years old and I feel I can justify spending some money on it but with a limited budget I'm not sure where to go with it.

thoughts crossing my mind are;

- I couldn't possibly take it on a long adventure due to the adapter shaft being a weak link and having had about 3 replaced already I doubt I'll ever have faith in it (one reason for thinking LS3 or Coyotte VCool,

- paint work is generally in very good condition but have a couple of minor marks plus pebble dashing below head lights - do I touch up the paint work or go for a new colour. one of my concerns with this is almost every respray job I've seen the rivets are a give away so cappings and rivets would need to come out. but what about the front wings and a build up of paint in the recesses where the panel join?

- do I go with the black roof and black wheel arch extensions c/w privacy glass or stick with the original paint work?

- new seat covers and / or a good clean.

- every thing is generally really good but I want to sort before things get too bad. should I pretty much strip down and just touch up onto a galv chassis or just touch up the chassis which appears to be really except for the rear x-member which is in need of some paint.

decisions decisions - your thought would be appreciated. Thumbs Up

Yours is looking great! Smile

How about going for all leather seats? I still love my LRI ones after about 7 years:

Also... re the paintwork. I would touch-up (professionally) and maybe think of wrapping some parts.... A full respray's a big and messy job to do right... Just IMHO

By "Adaptor Shaft"...do you mean https://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/m...l?page=all ...?
I'll do that too at some point (altho mine's original at ~48k miles)

The Sony radio you sold me is still going strong! Thumbs Up Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

glad the sony is going strong Thumbs Up a good little unit and I think it's reasonable to say it was a good buy as it was like new. Thumbs Up

the leather looks rather smart Thumbs Up

yep adapter shaft. even with the Ashcroft mod I'd have no faith in it not giving up on me.

a respray would be a big big job to do right - effectively requiring a full strip down ..... at which point I guess it would be daft not to go with the galv chassis?

If it were mine I'd have some more 'in depth' maintenance done by a competent indi specialist, forget about the bodywork proper Land Rovers wear dents and scratches well! Whistle

Get the timing chain checked (here's why https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59897.html), injectors checked, turbo, starter and so on and on.

My Ashcroft output shaft has done 30k miles and was checked (no wear) after 10k when an Ashcroft transfer box was fitted.

SWMBO, dogs and I have done 6 continental trips. since the new engine, 3 - 4K miles each with no problems, but buttocks firmly clenched Rolling with laughter
Take out good breakdown cover and have more memorable Land Rover adventures Thumbs Up

Even standard seats are more comfortable than a bike Rolling with laughter Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right.

Tempting fate to say this I know, but at 245,000 miles my '07 still has its original factory adaptor shaft, timing chain, and even the original serpentine belt.
