Evening,
The rear hinges on my defender 90 have been streaking rust down the paint work for long enough now and I have been doing a bit of research into the options available. I had initially written off buying the aluminium billet hinges due to the high cost, however on the hinges listed below they claim the hinges are sufficiently strong to do away with the need for a spare wheel carrier. http://defenderupgrades.co.uk/product/land...aluminium/ In the future I plan on fitting wolf wheels including a matching spare, and I had been considering a spare wheel carrier but for purely aesthetic reasons I would rather not if I can get away with it. Has anybody experience of hinges like these or similar? On a similar note, has anyone with standard hinges mounted a wolf wheel on the standard wheel carrier and how has it faired? I agree, they may cope better with the stress and wear better, but presumably if the door is going to crack its going to crack regardless of the hinges.

I live in the Falklands and most vehicles are fitted with large tyres (33x12.50R15) which are much heavier than a normal 7.50R16 sort of size. Few people use the rear door for carrying a wheel, most are either inside the vehicle or most commonly, on a roof rack, because the combination of large tyres and the fact that most of our roads are unsurfaced gravel with lots of potholes means that the rear door takes a hammering if you put a wheel on it. Later post-2002 doors are better but it just means they last longer.
On all the vehicles, the problem is and always has been the door frame cracking up under the repeated movement imparted by the tyre (essentially just metal fatigue). Door hinges don't like it, but they aren't the main problem. The hinges will sag with age (and I am sure these will be much better in that respect) but I've never replaced a rear door hinge yet. This was my exact issue a couple months ago, I replaced my drop down tailgate on my DCPU for a side open but I didnt want to use a wheel carrier. So me and a mate developed some new hinges. (They have a few features that other hinges on the market don't have, making them more suitable for this!)
Used a standard Defender wheel carrier holding a Cooper ST Maxx 285/75/16 tyre on a 16x8 steel wheel. Done roughly 3000 miles on and off road since, without a hint of play or damage to the rear of the landy.
