When I had my 110 next to the new 110 I did some comparing. JLR has obviously moved the seats backwards within the vehicle leaving a much shorter load space. It is still shorter than a traditional 110 van with the seats down. I got the inquisition for daring to point this out. They go nuts too when you point out the worse departure, approach and break over angles. That's simple geometry. A longer wheelbase vehicle simply cannot cover the same ground off road as a short wheelbase.
There seems to be a crowd absolutely determined to silence any criticism of this vehicle, it's all very strange. I'm simply neutral about it (got much more important things to worry about) leaning towards disappointment. Horses for courses I think. The old has the heritage and unique look that the new doesn't. If it comes down simply to capability and ease of use then of course the new is a good option, although I guess some people might question how distinct it is from the rest of the range.
The looks (which to me make or break a car) are in the eye of the beholder of course. I just can't see a strong resemblance to the old, in fact only the back view even begins to get there to me. In 90 form I think its got the look, the 110 maybe a bit too Disco. It's the front, they could've done a bit more to make it more like its predecessor.

Not sure if everyone has seen this but makes some interesting watching and gives a different design perspective from someone a bit more down to earth than McGovern.
Watching it made me realise that I have been biased against the new Defender partly because of my dislike of McGovern, and watching this you can see a bit more why it looks the way it does. Saying that I still don’t like the way it looks and has been referred to before, it’s not “Defendery” enough, and even in its own right it’s not particularly attractive. I’ll stick with the D4 for everyday use and the 110 for when I want to get to my destination with wet feet |

The wheels look like Startec rejects given away in MaxPower magazine but they are what comes as factory issue on some models.......... another way for LR to make extra profit out of buyers who want something less bling Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Loooks like the love child of a Skoda Yeti and FL2 to me on large van tyres.
I think the biggest thing that puts people off is it's not utilitarian and is just like any other car out there. I think most people out there that were just shown that pic would say it's a car. Defenders never were like that, always were a bit different. I'm happy with my 90. The only other I'd even consider is a Wrangler. And I'm not keen on the rest of their range either especially the new little Jeep Renegade I think they call it. Which looks similar to this and is in the case of that a little car lifted a bit basically. Well he certainly comes across as far more authentic than the Prof and like you his explanations started pulling me into the vehicle more and more. Thanks for posting it. I've still got a few reservations and questions ~ not seeing the silhouette as a Defender and just how does authentic stack up with wheel arches designed for a live axle? |
