My local JLR dealer used to also be a TAta dealership for a couple of years, they never sold a single Tata Safari Or pickup and ended up giving their Safari Wagon away to a scrappy after if dissolved with tin worm! They sold more Mahindra “jeeps” than they sold Tata’s Indian products! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Maybe not good news then considering "Reports from India say the engineering of the Omega-Arc (new platform) benefited from input from Tata Steel, which helped reduce costs without affecting vehicle safety."

Niche marketing? JLR still looking for the volume that can't be generated by a 3 model lineup.

Also, if the 80 is going to be produced in Slovakia, it may help the contract if there are minimum volumes or contributions to overheads.

with more models on the same platform/chassis, you can make more money. broaden the scope of who you want to sell the cars too.

True ~ but the Defender 80 is going on a "new" unique platform.

Not only that but it contradicts a key element of their previously disclosed strategy:

The compact SUV market is the big money maker at the moment. I believe Jeep are out selling LR thanks to their Renegade.

A small affordable LR should’ve been out years ago.

J77 - it was called the Freelander 1!

If they're going to do another, the size of the FL1 but bhp and build quality of FL2 I'll put my deposit down now.

Just had a quick read of the article and is it just me or does this look more in keeping than the new defender?

According to the article this Land Rover (sorry not Defender) 80 sits well below the Freelander / Discovery Sport price point:

"Today’s Discovery Sport is priced from £31,000 as, in real terms, was the Freelander 2 when it was released in 2006. With a mooted £25,000 entry price for the new car, it means Land Rover must engineer in significant cost savings."

I missed it on 1st read, but the article all suggests that the base model will be front wheel drive only.

We've been looking at Disco Sports across here in France & Germany / Italy - a huge majority are front wheel drive only and its in the small print!

On Autoscout24 you see one at a decent cost and then in the tech details its a 4x2, I suppose a vast amount of users wouldn't know / care anyway, IIRC there was someone on here who was taken around Eastnor in a 4x2 Evoque and it performed pretty well.

I personally couldn't own a LR that wasn't 4x4, as Lilo would say 'its an abomination!'

@G4UJS : Agree completely. Especially the 4x2 Series I and II's that the factory produced. I think most went to the RAF for use on bases.

Here's a couple of photos of a nice 4x2 restoration I found on the net :

@J77 : I have to agree that FL2 was very well built. The one we had was extremely well screwed together and 100% reliable. However, it just didn't feel like a proper Land rover to me. It could have been any modern SUV.

Freely2 was often referred to as the baby RR as it was more FFRR scaled down than Evoque! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
