camping
Hi all
off camping in a couple of weeks and want to put most of the gear on the roof rack, sorry if this sounds stupid but do you have special plastic boxes for your gear to strap down or canvus bags then cover it all with a tarp? just worried in case it rains and it all get wet befor you start?

Presumably because you have a truck full of people? or some other reason? Unless you spend money on true watertight boxes they WILL leak if it rains. A tarp you'll have to spend a long time positioning and it better be strong and have strong tie outs due to the road speed. Then there is the issue of weight on the roof and how much gear you want to take etc.

Or get a large dedicate roof box etc.

More info required really.

Thanks Mike

The kit we want to put in the rack would be the tent, 2 camping chairs, sleeping bags and all the cooking bits are in plastic boxes like what you would get from B&Q with lids on, the food will go in the cab, pillows, clothes and the dog is in the back too? Not much point having a big rack if you cant use it really, it a brownchurch rack.

yeah i take your point but if you dont need to put it on the roof then why bother? just creates more noise and more fuel consumption and more risk of it getting wet. your food boxes from B&Q shouldnt go on the roof to be honest, they're pretty weak and may well crack at the slightest pothole. As you said before, if it all gets wet before you start you're going to have a pretty miserable time and that goes for the chairs too, if they get wet they're a Censored to dry out.

you could put the stuff in dry bags like LOMO or Ortlieb, lomo are cheaper.

Used roof box a lot and was fine even in Scotland during winter. Used dry bags for clothes inside box.

I dont like too much the boxes due the space needed to store it when are not in use.

Im quite happy with this bag for the stuff in the roof rack (I have 2 for our 6 member family).

I have use it with heavy rain without troubles and is very easy to store.

Also I have 3 of this plastic boxes that I use in some cases

Cheers Eduardo

I've got a big Ortlieb waterproof bag the I've used to carry sleeping bags, quilts, pillows etc on the roof rack of the TR. Keeps the weather out totally and I also have some Zarge boxes that seem good.

The OzTent goes on the roof along with light stuff like the sleeping bages - anything heavy on the roof and you will soon overload the rack and risk being too top heavy. John

Hi Yanto
the large 'really useful' boxes are ok for a few days light use and are reaonably priced, but I would double wrap vital items like sleeping bags in plastic bags before puting them in the boxes.
we carry our chairs and awnings on the roof when camping, with the sleeping bags in the waggon at all times.
cooker and food can be put in boxes with no real worries - but make sure that the cooker dosn't contaminate your food stuff. (esp ...if liquid fuel)
bags a good as well - but as above - double wrap vital items !

I can only recommend Ortlieb, too. Watertight, very sturdy and easy to store when not in use. The model I use is called Big Zip. Have got two of them.

About a year ago I had to drive back from Romania with the 110 loaded up with stuff we'd left there prior to our move back to the UK.

What couldn't fit inside went on the roof. I took one of those plastic sheets that painters use to cover furniture (dropcloth - but made out of plastic), the thin type, and I wrapped up securely whatever I was carrying on the roof.

It didn't flap too much, and any noise wasn't noticeable over the roar of the tyres on the tarmac.

We put everything in peli cases, there expensive (luckily i dont have to pay for them) but i really don't think you can beat them. Make good seat when your at your destination too.

I love Peli cases. They're brilliant but very pricey. For camping I'd want one of their massive chests (or two or three) but they'd cost as much as the car!

I need to take my trailer test (pain in the A) and buy a new widetrack Sankey - all problems solved.
