Check the earth at the back door. The high level brake light and heated rear window share and earth path. If that is damaged it is probably earthing back through the brake lights.
I would possibly even put money on the earth cable being broken in the rubber convoluted tube that runs to the rear door. Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

I wish I had a pound for every time a car comes up so close that their headlights disappear from view.( I probably should not admit it but I was taught (by a Police Class 1 instructor

Yes, you were absolutely correct. The earth connection between the rear door and the vehicle had failed, wire replaced and all is now as it should be.
