Thanks. I'll confess to not having looked at it at all, but I vaguely remember reading something about the sub being a special to match the head unit and didn't know if it had some sort of unusual connector. Darren

I honestly don't know the answer to that.

All I can think of is ensuring the crossover is matched. So that the correct high/mid/low frequencies are send to the sub etc.

I have the same issue, Darren.

The Alpine head unit has twin RCA connectors to the sub and a remote cable connection that switches the sub on/off with the head unit. The JVC has a single RCA out to the sub.

Something similar to the below sorts the first issue:

But I’m thinking I may need to ditch the remote and wire the sub with manual on/off.....I’ll check again as am planning to sort this and the camera this weekend. Ian

Ah, I'd be really interested to know how you get on with that.

I guess if it's just a 12v signal to turn it on then any old ignition live would do? Darren

On most head units there's a switched output to allow controlling subs / aerial amplifiers / electric aerials etc. Off the top of my head it'll be a blue wire...

Just a word of warning. The blue / white wire mentioned here is known commonly as the RMT (REMOTE.)

As has been mentioned, it's purpose is to turn on audio devices as a signal not a power source.
Thus, it have a very limited load capacity around 300mA max. (Typically.)
It also should be fused at about 250mA nearest the HU to protect the inner circuitry etc.
Especially if you have a HU worth quite a bit. Exclamation

It will switch a single Amp on no problem, you could probably just about get away with two.
Beyond that don't do it, you'd then need an ignition 12v fed dedicated supply using the RMT. as a signal switching feed only for the relay coil.

You'd also need a dedicated circuit as mentioned above if you wanted anything else powered so your HU effectively becomes an automatic switch.

Regardless, I would definitely fuse this feed at the HU rear in-line.

You can use a fused ignition 12v instead if you want but your Amplifiers will be on all the time the ignition is on.
Including during the start up process of the engine and that won't help the starter, voltage drop or be great for the Amp(s).
Really you don't want any devices powered up during the starting process, after all you wouldn't and shouldn't turn your lights on before starting the engine..
That way you are putting cull CCA from the battery to the starter. Particularly important in cold weather.

This will be the next upgrade I think.

Thanks to the OP - This is why this forum is epic. Sandy

This looks good, especially with the very subtle reversing camera. Is it plug-n-play with the factory fitted hands-free mic?

Reviews of the camera are poor, has anyone got a sample from the head unit of the reversing camera in use?

Firstly a big Thank-you to whoever first spotted this DIN unit.

Installed yesterday with non-JVC camera. One that has infra-red and wide-angle. Also installed the Focal speakers.
Plus another camera on the car transporter.

It’s just brilliant. Camera’s work a treat and the sound is better than the Bang and Olufsen stuff in the Wife’’s posh Audi.
Note: truck also has massive sub-woofer and separate amp pre-installed.

Do you have a link to the camera you have please? Sandy

Hi Sandy,
I’ll ask the installer. I went with his choice of camera.
In case you can find it with Google- here’s a close up pic:

Finally have the camera details. It is this one:

I did not buy them myself. The installer sourced them. So far they are perfect though.👍🤞

Hi Ian,

How did you get on with this? I've just been gifted one of these head units for my birthday and so will need to solve the problem. Darren

Darren,

Not yet.....somehow time disappears. But like Brewstop I did fit this today in an effort to spur myself on (a Christmas present to myself):

Ihod - that looks really good!

I've got a standard camera fitted at the moment, what's the image quality like on the Optimill unit?

Can you see the tow hitch?
