Have you checked the condition of the radiator? If it is old it could be that the poor condition of the fins or restricted flow is causing this.

You mention it's always been "gutless". Have you checked the MAF is working? I simple check is to unplug it and take it for a test drive.
I'm not sure if this would affect the temperature overall, but it might improve things. By the way I wish I could get those mpg figures out of mine ... |

Does a 19J have a viscous fan?
I replaced the viscous fan on my 200tdi and that made a big difference as the old one had failed. BORG - Bucks & Oxon 4x4 Response Group |

The 19j has a oil cooler integral with the rad.
Just thinking if an additional oil cooler my be an idea. Or. Replace current viscous fan with electric . Would leave issue with lack of power. Any advise on pump timing ? Regards Alan S |

40 to 50mpg on a 19J honestly?
if you chnage down a gear or tackle the hill a gear lower does that help reduce temp, just thinking EGT temps bringing it up under load. the 19J was good for its time, well i felt mine was at the time, the time when most traffic on main roads was at 40-50mph not the 50-60mph now and everyone near enough slowed down on long hill climbs. nowdays vehicles tend to keep the desired 70mph on any incline and the expectation is for every vehicle to do the same. maybe its just been worked too hard? mine never liked sitting on long hills at 60mph. once it got to 60mph that is. check handbrake not binding unrestricted air flow to engine coolant circulating as it should an indication of EGT would prob show it going up and creating the heat under hard load. On the basis that no-one measures their progress up hills in mpg, I assumed it was a typo and should have said mph. Yes sorry Typo. MPH not MPG
Hand brake set correctly. Air flow good . Fitted with snorkel inlet facing forward Coolant good flow no air lock In most cases have to drop down to 4th on steeper hill down to 3rd Not difference in high temp Mainly when engine under load of which you would expect but not so hot. Regards Alan S |
