Pump timing set to std spec as the manual. Advancing the pump timing should increase power but to how advance to go. Alan S |

When you say the engine is getting hot are you relying on the temp gauge as recently my gauge needle was well over to the right, turned out the gauge was faulty. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Will check with thermometer to confirm Temp sender switch I’d LR as I know the pattern once are no good. Alan S |

Common issue on the 19J was the diaphragm for pump fueling via boost pressure the rubber splits - its located on the Fuel injection pump right hand side when view from front vehicle.
can be removed in situ - be it a PITA to do Mine was split, engine gets less fuel - often required when going up hill ! |

Thanks for link.
Had diaphragm changed 4 years ago due to tank pressuring .along with the fuel pump being rebuilt by diesel specialist. Mileage around 6k only since change. But will have a look. Thanks to all how have helped on this subject. Regards Alan S |

Did you manage to solve the issue? Frankly speaking I doubt if it can be solved.
Where I live, we only have short commutes. Although quite hilly, the hill would be short for any major increase in engine temperature. However I also used to tow a 2 ton boat, so getting up a hill needed lower gears and good use of the 'throttle'. And there it used to warm up a bit more. Needle still remained in the white zone of the temperature gauge though. Before stopping it for the restoration, the diaphragm in the injection pump failed. Rather than pressurizing the tank, it was leaking fuel into the turbo charger. So to prevent a self destruction, I decided to simply plug the pipe between the injection pump and the turbocharger (where it connects with the T piece to the waste gate actuator). After that it became gutless. Needed to shift in 4th or even 3rd. But before that, it could manage every hill in 5th gear (1.4 transfer box, and unladen 90 HT). Just keep in mind that this is a cast iron cylinder head so do not expect ant good heat transfer to the coolant. But in my opinion is a reasonable engine and felt happy to stay on 3/4 load all day long. PS. Mine had a lot of blow by every since I bought it with only 35kmiles. I stopped it for restoration at 128kmiles with what seems like the same amount of blow by. Yet to open the head. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |
