2000 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Alveston Red
Limp mode P0101 code help please
Hi all. I have searched the internet with regard to my fault and not really succeeding so can anyone assist please?

I have a 2015 2.2

Driving last week it went to limp mode. If you switch of and restarts it drove for about 7 miles before going back to limp mode. The engine light was on the dash.
Picked up a cheap diognostics and shows the P0101 code only as is the issue.

Have changed the air filter and also a new MAF censor. Although they say it’s the correct one the sensor part is in a different place to the other. Would this make a difference?
Had cleared the fault and still got the same issue.
Checked the intercooler hoses and all look ok but still got the same issue.
If you reset it pretty much after a mile or two it’s back on

Anyone else any ideas as know Landrover will be charging the earth to start checking it.

Did you ensure it was fitted with the correct airflow direction as marked on the top section?

Yes thanks didn’t think of it being wrong way but it was in the right way.

Top pic is the new one. Do you think cheap sensor could be the issue?

Have you checked the intercooler itself - they do split also.

I’ve not had the intercooler out. I wasn’t really sure the best way to check it? I’m not a defender engineer really.

Had the same issue with mine. Found as long as I kept the turbo off boost I could drive round the problem, as a short term get me home fix, but it got progessively worse.

The end cap for the intercooler had seperated and was audible as a hissing sound, but visually you'd never see it until you've got the cooling pack off 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone
2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone
2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW

Not the best photo but found a split in the intercooler as you can see.

Any advice on removing the intercooler please. I have air con fitted.
Any pics would also be a massive help.

Not the best photo, but with assistance from my brother, we managed to remove the intercooler without disconnecting either the radiator or the air con rad.

The cooling pack is mounted on studs fitted into the wings (which is great when it went down the assembly line and they fitted the wings after everything else, but not really maintenance friendly) which once removed the whole lot is movable within the confines of the attached hoses.

Most difficult part was getting the boost hoses back on afterwards 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone
2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone
2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW

I have exactly the same problem!

Puma 2.2, P0101 fault code and 'limp mode'.

The key thing, after lots of experimenting, is that it comes on regularly when lifting off the throttle after accelerating under load and spinning the turbo up. It's on again within a couple of miles after clearing the code. No obvious change in noise from the engine.

So far I have:
Cleaned the MAF sensor (with proper cleaner) - no improvement
Checked the sensor wiring - all looks ok, but I've kind of ruled this out because it's triggered by driving style rather than intermittently.
Checked the intercooler and hoses carefully - no obvious holes/splits in the hoses, the clamps are tight and the intercooler end caps look to be fine.

Any suggestions as to what to eliminate next would be much appreciated - I can see me chucking hundreds at this problem changing parts with no guarantee of a fix!

Please help! Crying or Very sad

Have you checked the short 'L' shaped hose low down on the left side of the engine? When I fitted my BAS intercooler and hoses, that was the most flimsy feeling original one, and naturally, it's also hugely entertaining to swap (the skin grafts have just about healed after a year....)

After that, is there anything on the turbo which could be sticking and causing the same symptoms on lift-off?
