Does your Puma ever get confused
Not sure if this is the early indication of a fault or simply user error.
On two occasions now, about 2 months apart, I have jumped in the defender and started it immediately, i.e. no time for any heaters or self checks. The engine started but ran erratically / lumpy. I thought once it warmed up, it would be OK, but it wasn't. So I turn the ignition off, and restart it. from then on it is perfect and just the same as it always is.
So, did I confuse things by starting to quickly or could this be the early signs of an imminent failure.
I have checked the plugs on the ECU, yellow relay and green box immobiliser.
your thoughts are appreciated

From cold... let the Glow Plug(s) Heating Light go out then start...
'if symptoms persist'... check for any recorded fault codes.

it wasn't intentional, it's normally after I have been driving a petrol vehicle for a while. There were no fault codes sored so I think I will just put it down to me.

I don’t think I’ve NOT used the glow plugs on start up about 2 times in 10 years.
I use them on every start, varies in time they are active between cold start and hot start but I always use them every time.

There is a fairly significant voltage drop on start up which is something to bear in mind too. No Guts, No Glory.

Can you hear the click on a Puma, I’ve never listened for it? I usually wait for it in the 300tdi, especially if it is a cold morning.

I would suggest it not leaving the glow plugs to go through the heat up cycle should make little to no difference with the exception of when it's very cold and then only for the first few seconds?

Modern diesels engines (300tdi included) keep the glow plugs activated for a predetermined time, after startup, as part of the cold start strategy. It helps with startup smoke, emissions and smoothness.

Just because the light has gone out doesn't mean the glow plugs have turned off Thumbs Up

Surely this is not just a case of the Glow plugs. premature starting causes other issues.

Most modern vehicles go through a self check when the ignition is activated, during which they shouldn't be started, indeed some of the large trucks and coaches I drive will not start until this self check is completed. What's the problem with just letting the vehicle. Land Rover, or anything else complete it's self check.

As a final comment, and friend of mine has the same vehicle as me, and has had in the past various problems and glitches by being in a rush to drive away, including turbo issues, I have had none. A bit of consideration ie allowing the self check, and engine to idle briefly before driving gently till warm is called mechanical sympathy and as an 'old git' HGV/PSV held for 36 years this consideration can only be beneficial

Hi Sulisuli,

As long as it takes me to put the seat belt on, and check no warning lights and check the mirrors ensuring it's safe to move off - maybe 20 seconds. I do the same before switching off, also, just let the engine idle for 10 or 20 seconds.

If, however I've been working it hard, towing our caravan on the motorway or about to tow on the motorway, I always allow the engine to idle for a minute or so, to ensure good oil flow.

I operate this way with whatever I'm driving and it seems to aid reliability and longevity
