Various companies made replacement alloy bashplates for Freelander1 and L320 RRS as I bought them but LR took the hump and unless you had one with a flap in it to access the oil filter and sump drain plug they charged an extra hour’s labour at service time......... i’m Sure it won’t take long for the accessory companies to get into production with a solid plate version for New Defender
The other problem with the OEM ‘plates’ was that they trapped mud badly and engine heat would dry it out to concrete making it very difficult to get out, also made backwards recovery from deep mud fraught as the under-tray acted like a scrapper. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come 2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

Excellent article ~ author has done some legwork for once and not just quoting from the media pack given them by JLR. A bit worried about the coconut matting nailed to the underside. Taking sustainability just too far. |

In other 4x4 areas they appear to have moved on to Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE, UHMW) with interesting results. |

It felt extremely solid. The materials felt tough but luxuriously styled. The steering wheel felt chunky in the hand and controls were easy to hand. Next step is to drive it! 2016 D4 HSE 1998 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF 1982 Series 3 SWB Petrol |

I've been desperately trying to think where I've seen the steel wheels before. Now I've remembered:

The matting materials used for inner wheelarch lining on the D5 is the worst idea ever. Mud, slush and ice sticks to it. Last winter I thought the wheel bearings had gone, upon inspection it turned out that slush/ice had built up between the wheel and inner lining. I then drove to a safe place to remove it. When I turned into a layby there was a nasty crunch noise. Turns out with the front wheels on full lock the tyre hit the now frozen solid ice. Resulting in a ripped off mud flap, lower trim and damage to the wing 130's have feeling's as well you know |

I wonder how durable the plastics will be.
When I look at my '02 Disco2 and '07 Defender, every single bit of unpainted external plastic is now a random wishy washy grey colour, presumably due to UV damage. On the Disco, the wheel arch trims, rather than their original smooth textured finish, now are as rough as coarse sandpaper for the same reason. There is an awful lot of external plastic on the new vehicle. I hope it is better. |

As others have said the new Defender really should have been the new Discovery. I had a D3 for 8 years with very little in the way of problems, I am therefore beginning to think that buying a D3 with good provenance for a third of the price would make more sense as I’m sure the D3 will do exactly the same as what the new Defender will do without the fake checker plate etc and without the huge depreciation. My D3 was supremely comfortable, was superb in the mud and snow and would with the rear seats down carry a huge load and tow anything I needed to. I also think that the D3/4 will eventually become an iconic shape much like our proper Defenders.

Yes I’m also interested in a D3/4. They look great, they’re cheap (maybe for a reason) and their versatile. Just need to budget for maintenance 🤔
Keep it for 3 years and then trade it in for a new shape 110 perhaps👍🏻 2002 td5 90 county hardtop |

You need deep pockets to run a D3/D4. That, and a love for gambling.
They can be cheap to buy (although some people really do have inflated ideas of the value of *their* vehicle) but they are never cheap to run. You'll need to replace suspension bushes fairly regularly and the transmission needs to have been looked after (not a service item according to JLR, but then once out of warranty it's your problem ) They're essentially now in the space the P38 filled a few years back. On their 4th owner, maintenance is being skimped, bits are wearing out and the bills are mounting. Bangernomics they are not. 54 Freelander modded for mud 2008 D3 SE 2010 90 XS SW 1978 88 Series 3 undergoing surgery with a new owner 2007 90 County Truck Cab - gone 2006 D3 SE - gone 2004 Freelander Sport - gay 1999 Disco V8 ES rotted to bits |
