I wonder how long until diagnostic tools like the nano com evo etc will be released? It'll only be a defender if you can keep it going yourself in my book...

The time to buy a future classic is when it is in the "bangernomics" zone, when they are old news and most people owning them cannot afford to run or maintain them properly, whilst collectors are looking the other way. I know this, as I went through the same scenario with my Range Rover Classic. The D3 could yet become another Land Rover iconic shape, so if you like them I would find a really nice example and look after it regardless of cost. It will probably still be a saving on the annual depreciation of the Pretender, and nice ones in the future will rise in price. My son used to own one and ran it to Bulgaria and back several times, fully loaded and with no major problems. He must have liked it because he has recently taken possession of his mother's D3, when it became too big for her. (Out of interest, is the D3 a pre-McGovern design? It must be - because I like it! ) |

I think so - it's Ford-era from the Gerry's LR gap years. He worked on the original Freelander, of course.
What I didn't realise until a few minutes ago is that he was also responsible for the SVX, so that's another thing he has to answer for Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? Gerry MacG was also the designer of the MG F, so he goes back to the days before the PAG days of Land Rover under Ford ownership. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

Yeah, the Freelander was around the same time. He then left to work in the States for a while before returning to LR in 2004. Darren

Is that the 2008 SVX? If so, I suddenly have to tip my hat to the guy. Never thought that that would happen. Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

Clearly his time in the States has had a massive influence on his choice of target market for this over-sized lump of plastic. Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

What designs did he come up with during our period of respite when he was in the States? Were they as dreadful and clone-like as those he's inflicted on us?

I ran my D3 for 8 years with no big issues, yes they can be heavy on suspension parts, I had mine done once when it was 9 years old, the only other problem I had was with the auto shift changer which needed the plate underneath the gearbox removing and the mechanism spraying with thin oil once every couple of years to make sure it was free. The new Defender will I’m sure depreciate massively over the first 3 years, which would buy you a heck of a lot of preventative maintenance for your D3.As Slidey says buy a well looked after one with full service , make sure the cam belts have been changed when they should and I’m sure if you look after it you will get many years of faithful service and may well start to appreciate again. I sold my mint condition 1971 Range Rover over 20 years ago, the best price I could get was £1700, look what they are fetching now. |
