Defender Purchase
Hi All,

Hope this is in the right section... If not please move it!

After a bit of advice - although i'm sure there is no real right or wrong answer...

I'm looking to purchase my first Defender and have narrowed down my purchase to a Puma XS Station Wagon. Currently have it down to 2 currently for sale - a 2008 2.4 TDCI with around 40K of miles - always been serviced by the selling LR main dealer. Looks in good condition and well cared for, although showing early signs on under body corrosion.

The second is a 2013 (62) 2.2 TDCI with around 90K miles on the clock - full service history from main dealer and specialists. Again looks very well cared for - haven't made full under body checks as of yet, but would do before purchase.

They are both similarly priced and wondering if there are any benefits for the newer vehicle with higher millage, as opposed to the older vehicle with lower mileage...

I'm looking for it to be a long term purchase as a second vehicle alongside a 2 seater - so would be mainly used throughout the winter and when space is required. It's probably more up to personal preference, they both seem like nice, well looked after vehicles but would be interested in hearing any comments from the wealth or knowledge on the forum!

Thanks! Toby

Hi

I would only add,, Mileage is not a indication of condition

The 11 plate should be a 2.4, and if 2011 model year, should be half the price for road tax ? California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

Thanks! Sorry, should have said 2013 2.2 (on a 62 plate) - I agree mileage isn't everything and servicing / condition / who has looked after it is more important.

Cheers.

Guess it depends on your exact budget but having just gone through this exact process in the last couple of months then personally you want the best condition, lowest mileage, highest spec truck you can get (and for the best deal obviously!!)

What i did was have a 'spec list' that any option had to have with a further 'wish list' that would cement the deal - in the end i travelled approx 350miles round trip to collect 'the one' that best suited.......

I think condition is probably the most important factor. However, you might want to check road tax could vary considerably. The 2.2 also have a pdf which some dont like.

I have a 62 plate 2.2 and very pleased with it.

Good luck! James

Whatever defenders you look at if it doesnโ€™t feel right walk away, you may have to spend a day travelling a long way twice (once to view , second to collect) but it will be worth it. 2015 HT XS 90

I had a similar decision to make & decided on the newer (2013) 2.2 with higher mileage, but always serviced by main dealers, lower emissions than 2.4 & half the road tax.

4 years ago I was in the same boat ๐Ÿ‘ I chose the 2.4. the higher milage truck would now be on 150k probably fine if well serviced, I'm happy with my choice, longest car I have owned.

Road tax is higher on the 2.4 and also the station wagon however on the overall cost of ownership that's not a deal breaker.

Love my truck, loads of mods you can do๐Ÿ‘

As others have said you get a feel for what's right...my two I narrowed it down to I preferred the black truck over silver looks amazing when clean ๐Ÿ˜€

Only five years between them. Twenty years time they'll probably be pretty much the same. It all depends on how much maintenance you put into them - and EVERYTHING can be fixed. (aren't they all keepers now? no-one sells a Defender any more do they?)

I chose silver - it doesn't show the dirt. Gets washed twice a year whether it needs it or not.

Thanks for all the comments, advice and sharing your purchasing experiences - all very useful and helping me make the decision - given it's supposed to be a keeper I'm heading towards the slightly older but lower mileage and good history / condition at present...

I think the BAS (Bell Auto Services) tuning options are probably a bit better with the 2.2 than the 2.4. And you'll want to do it...!
