Jon, that's not the block itself but a big "bracket" onto which the alternator, water pump and power steering pump are mounted. Even then, I don't think it's cracked, I think it's a trick of the light with the flash.
Google 300tdi auxiliary bracket and the images will show you. The p gasket tends to weep. If water is pouring out then I would still first suspect a split hose, then a fractured water pump and finally a crack in the block. You should be able to see a major leak like this. Try drying everything out before refilling.

Thanks very much. The hoses are definitely fine. I’ll order a new pump on Monday and will swap it out and report back.

The other possibility is a corroded and ruptured core plug. More likely than than a cracked block. I didn’t think of it because they are more likely to rupture in freezing weather with no or weak antifreeze.
Not had one go on this engine so cannot tell you where they are but they will be on the block. |

Thank you. I’ll try and locate it. The water is definitely coming from the direction of the water pump so there is a very good chance that the water pump and/or gasket is causing the problem.

Took the belt off this morning and can immediately see the problem. The top pulley wheel is very loose and the water pours from there. Looks like a bearing has gone so it’s definitely the water pump.
I’ve taken the self adjuster off and the top pulley but the lower pulley on the water pump is very tight. I’ll give the nuts a spray with duck oil in hope they will loosen up as I don’t want to break one off! |

Put the belt back on. It will create more friction to help loosen the belt.
Also the angle at which you put the spanner determines the leverage on the bolt or the pulley. |

Sorry should have said, top pulley, tensioner and belt are back on but two of the 3 bits on the lower pulley are still locked solid.

Two of the bottom three bits are now off but the third and final but has rounded off!!! Any top tips for getting it off? Has anyone used the Irwin tools for removing rounded heads?

Just a short note to say thanks for the advice. I changed the water pump, belt and tensioner today and the old girl is back on the road. After I managed to get the final bolt out the PAS pump pulley the job was a piece of cake.
