had a phone call yesterday
guy salmon called me yesterday to see if id like to sell my defender . no was the reply but he did indicate that there would be a unveiling of the new defender in long wheel base in there showroom in Wakefield in mid to late November
starting price 40000 plus but not available till late February or early march

My JLR dealer says, view October, delivery early in the New Year, from £40,000 plus. So going on that, the spec I want will be somewhere around £65,000, which I’m happy with.

I’ve had new Land Rover products since the beginning of the 1980’s, I tend to keep them three or four years, putting a fairly high mileage on them. My current car is a late 2015, Discovery 4, HSE Luxury. I’ve now retired from business and going to buy one last new car. The choice is Evoque, Velar or Defender II, the rather unbalanced look of the back of the new Discovery puts me off that model. Due to a family member being on the JLR employee discount scheme, I can get a discount off the Evoque and the Velar. I’m reliably informed, as with all newly introduced JLR products, there will be no employee discount off the new Defender. If I spec an Evoque, I can get the highest spec available for just over £50,000, a Velar comes in at just over £70,000. I anticipate the cost of a high spec Defender II will be somewhere in the region of £65,000. I use the car for my hobby of landscape photography which takes me all over the place, off road and in Winter....which would you buy out of three? I must add I’m not interested in any other manufacturers products.

Ignore the"unbalanced " look, if it does he job and you get a discount ..job done .The appearance is just that and the functionality and suitability for your own requirements are surely more important than looks.
My opinion only as I buy the best stuff for a job that I can afford , within reason, not to look at. It may not be the prettiest but a lot are much worse, they seem to hold their values too. Thumbs Up 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue

If you've got £65,000 to spend I would go for the D5. If your OCD is causing problems with the number plate (and I must confess it annoys me every time I pull up behind one) then why not go for the Startech boot lid insert that puts the number plate where it should be - ie in the middle. At £700 it is not expensive.

Was in dealers Sunday collecting new car, had a long chat about defender, they expect I will be able to take delivery march at the earliest and that could be engine/option dependent. If I can get a p400e 110 HSE for about 65k-70k ill be happy. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

£70k for a Defender?! Gotta be kidding.

I paid about £16500 for my brand new 300Tdi Defender in early 2007. I paid £24500 for an immaculate two-year old Puma with 4000 miles and loads of extras on it about 18 months ago, having given up waiting for a quote from the dealer. You could buy a 'new' one until quite recently (last of the 2015 model year build) for less than £30k, and I regarded that as pretty expensive.

£70k or anything even vaguely in that direction is absolutely crazy for anything purporting to be a Defender or its replacement. ---

Wouldn’t surprise me if SVO versions are even higher up in AMG G Wagon territory. Prices will hopefully start realistic but I think will quickly add up, engine options alone on the D5 instantly add £10k. My first D3 new was just over £30k my last D4 was £66k for essentially same car. Our Current D5 similar spec to last D4 was £76k landrover know what they can charge and the Defender Brand has a lot of potential in my opinion Sad 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

My problem isn’t the off-set number plate, my problem is the D5’s ‘butt’ as seen from the side. The overhang just looks wrong. Shape, length, proportion. Big Cry Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

The problem Bog-Monster is that you (and I would suggest many on this forum) are not the target market. They’re not targeting bearded, middle-aged, ale drinking obsessives, who enjoy farming, green-leaning, over-landing, and are happy to ‘tinker’ on their pride and joy on a rainy Sunday morning, a hot brew within arm’s reach in their HUE mug. They won’t target people who go to Steam Fairs and take photos (and post those photos) of Fred Dimbar’s little beauty. They won’t be targeting people who want to be on this forum. They won’t be targeting people who are happy to be wet, cold, deaf, uncomfortable or broken down, just to own a vehicle with ‘character’.

But they will be targeting young urbanites who are middle-to-high income earners, who do a city-based 9-5 job, but who spend weekends on their 7k mountain bike, ski on their latest Black Diamonds, (kitted out top to toe in Arc’teryx), take part in global ‘challenges’ like the Étape and UTMB, have a selection of modern Gins at home, not a home-brew kit, will already have a ‘sports’ car in their stable, plus possibly a family run-around (RS6), have kids called Zack and Flo. They will head to food festivals, be tinkering with Veganism, and ultimately, secretly, wish they were Bear Grylls (or the female equivalent) and hanker after appearing alongside Ant and Foxy on SAS - Are You Tough Enough. Monsieur Le Grenadier

I got the same feeling a few years ago when I went to collect the D4 following a service at James Edwards. I was dressed in working gear and the reps looked me up and down as if i smelled of cowshed, probably did, but that did not warrant the look of "what are you doing here?" Jeff
