ill put it another way, there is no way landrover would not have doubled their factories size for the old defender if they got 100k in orders, why didn't they double the size of the factory or run double shifts etc? because they didn't get the orders.

I don't agree with this, I am afraid. If apocryphal tales are to be believed, the cost of building the Defender was so great that the margins were at best minimal, at worst negative. I think it is likely that the new commercial JLR had no interest whatsoever in increasing Defender production if the investment required to do so could be used to increase, say, Evoque production where the margins were much greater. A far better ROI would be achieved.

I really think that JLR would have been quite happy if the Defender had just quietly atrophied and died, except for the value that the name and the heritage brings to the company. We have recently seen JLR exploit this to the absolute limit in recent years, for example with the footage of traditional Land-Rovers mixing it with the new Defender. The vehicles are chalk and cheese, as are the target markets, projected sales, etc, - there really is very little similarity - except for the fact that JLR is relying for sales on customers making the associatin between the classic Land-Rover brand and reputation and the new super-duper SUV thing

it is actually excellent marketing and business strategy, all a part of what we call "expectation management", and makes total sense. Even though I lament the loss of the Defender and its replacement with another bland and generic SUV, I am encouraged that JLR management seems to be doing a good job, something I had rather lost confidence in during the recent McGovern era.

I was right with you until the final couple of sentences.

I'd even add it was not just finance that was better employed elsewhere; there was a finite engineering resource that JLR would not "waste" on fixing or improving the Defender.

JLR management doing a good job? Therir whole push to 1m vehicles per annum output has put them into a particularly deep hole.. The Prof is still there tinkering isn't he?

I remember the first time I saw an L322 RR and it was something different and quite something to behold. The Disco3 had the same shock value, although maybe it took people longer to warm to it. I was hoping for a similar reaction with the new Defender, but it is just a bit meh (as the kids say). Not bad, but not in anyway impressive. Hopefully it's ability and features will be enough to blow our socks off instead, which I guess is the more important thing.

very reasonable comment, its a blacked out bond car, im sure in the coming days we will see more and more defining features will be revealed.

Are you being paid by anyone to be so perversely optimistic?

Really?, as soon as someone actual vocalizes they like the new defender, they are paid, are you serious, using that logic those that post continual negative stuff are also paid, who by, the jeep lobby? Rolling with laughter

Also your comment is a personal attack, pretty sure the rules are against that. when you start attacking people instead of actually countering or discussing the facts you have already lost the discussion.

Back to the defender shall we, i thought this forum was above this kind of rubbish that goes on on others

In all that bluster you didn't actually answer the question, rather seek to improperly imply a personal attack from a simple question. I may have been a little mischievous in posing it but your total hissy fit is unwarranted.

You do come across as far too evangelical to just be an ordinary punter...especially as you have only recently joined the forum, and seem to limit your posts almost exclusively to the one thread.

They have built us a modern take on the defender which is said to be more durable ...

Said by whom, pray?

Do you honestly think that in 70 years time someone will find a "new Defender" in a barn and drive it out?

Andy Deeks and in 70years i hope we are back on horses

I had no idea who Andy Deeks is, so I looked it up and found that he is in charge of durability for the new Defender!

So he is hardly impartial, and is rather unlikely to say that it lack durability!

When someone with independent experience of tough vehicles tells me it is durable I will believe it.

I find it hard to believe that durability has the same meaning to a vehicle manufacturer of today as it did to one from the 1940s. Today's engineer will be speaking in the context of warranty terms, product life cycles of 5 years and a certain expectation of designed in obsolescence.

In my opinion JLR should have made their design in line with their existing models...RR, new disco etc. Like it or not, this is the design language of LR today and lots of people like it. But what I see now is something in the middle: nor LR like nor retro.
If they tour the world with Best4x4far badges i expect them to have balls, but this design looks soft and average to me. Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR

Could be a "released" leak.

I don't know, but just a possibility.

Supacat, respectfully lets keep this discussion mature, we are here to discuss the new defender, not attack people. And yes it was an attack. I stand by my comments and ive been on Landrover forums no doubt longer that you, not that it a competition. As for LR PR, they dont stoop to posting on LR forums. Rolling with laughter
If you have anything to say in a positive or negative way about the new defender say it, but the second you or anyone else attacks the poster becuase you dont agree with then your side of tge discussion is already lost, stick to facts and opinion so we can have mature discussion.

I like the new defender and am passionate about it plus have a build slot reserved, hence am on a few forums to learn more about it and discuss and share, my main forum is not here as it slso is not for others. Any further rubbish like that will be reported. Back on topic shall we.
