It reminds me of one of those drain apertures you sometimes find in raised kerbs.

So along with the too curvy front end, they missed on the roofline too. Others have mentioned this and looking at it I agree. Definitely would have looked better if they did the roof like that red colored rendering floating around. This would be an incredible new design if they had just made the front more squared off and rugged and kept the original roof line. It does look good from behind and side profile overall though.
I’m still interested and excited to see more, but I will probably be waiting on the new ford bronco line models out soon, and even the 4 runner redesign. The wait will also let me see how these new defenders are holding up. I’m not keen on ford, but I’d say the new 4 runner or even sequoia may be a more practical choice between it and a new defender. And I just heard they may be canceling LandCruiser sales in the USA.

Looking at the goodwood shots, im happy with the roof, the bond shot doesn't show much of the roof profile or rear, i think when people see it all, the will be pleasantly surprised

I remember the first time I saw an L322 RR and it was something different and quite something to behold. The Disco3 had the same shock value, although maybe it took people longer to warm to it. I was hoping for a similar reaction with the new Defender, but it is just a bit meh (as the kids say). Not bad, but not in anyway impressive. Hopefully it's ability and features will be enough to blow our socks off instead, which I guess is the more important thing.

very reasonable comment, its a blacked out bond car, im sure in the coming days we will see more and more defining features will be revealed.

Are you being paid by anyone to be so perversely optimistic?

Really?, as soon as someone actual vocalizes they like the new defender, they are paid, are you serious, using that logic those that post continual negative stuff are also paid, who by, the jeep lobby? Rolling with laughter

Also your comment is a personal attack, pretty sure the rules are against that. when you start attacking people instead of actually countering or discussing the facts you have already lost the discussion.

Back to the defender shall we, i thought this forum was above this kind of rubbish that goes on on others

putting the looks aside, I was off this project once live axles, manual gearboxes and ladder chassis were crossed out.

Styling aside, I understand that it's actually on their new MLA chassis that has provision for hybrid and full electric drive trains.

I also thought the same, ive seen other say its on D7u, still other say both??

the first drives with all the uk mags said d7u, however they were not quoting the guy as saying that, so im not sure.

hybrid for sure, fully electric will come within 5 years imo.

... The previous defender was a terrible seller...

A little disingenuous, I feel, since as far as I know there was never a problem selling all the previous Defenders that could be made. The problem was the labour-intensive and hence costly and small volume manufacture.

From a commercial view it was inevitable that the new Defender would be aimed at the mass market, which in turn inevitably means most of the old one's endearing features become anachronisms.

At least there will be a good replacement for the Disco 2/3/4 (and the Skoda Yeti) at long last.

Put it this way, if they had 100000 orders per year they would have quadrupled the factory.

Slovakia has big production capability and LR can now produce 900000 vehicles annually

I would say not mass market but discerning capable 4x4 buyer

Yes, that in essence was my point. Landrover had no trouble selling every Defender that could be made, however it had no chance of making every Defender that could be sold. The problem was not that the last Defender was a "teriible seller" by any means, it was simply hopelessly anachronistic by modern manufacturing standards.

yeah i here ya, but what facts are you basing that on, I believe on one of the best years sales were up to 50k, later years were down to 20k approx.

ill put it another way, there is no way landrover would not have doubled their factories size for the old defender if they got 100k in orders, why didn't they double the size of the factory or run double shifts etc? because they didn't get the orders.

spot on and its super light, alloy everything i imagine, minimal rust? more than likely 5 star safety rated which most big companies or governments demant for fleets these days

Looking at the Bond photo. I do not like the looks of the new "Defender" at all. Granted it is not as bad as some of the concept photos that we have seen over the years, but that does not mean much....

I saw this beauty earlier during summer. Now that is a propper vehicle if you ignore the alloy rims. Take notes LR.

^^^ Bit too late for LR to take note Swedish bloke. More’s the shame.

I did a test this morning. I emailed the photo to Mrs Grenadier asking what she thought of the more rugged, face-lift version of the Disco5 and she said she really liked it, as she loved the D4 and had never quite got on with the blobby D5. Didn’t even cross her mind it was the Def replacement and she was as stunned as I was when I told her. Which given she’s not a lover of Defs is quite emotional for her... There's some good news here that people are missing.

As this is being built on a current JLR platform, and planned mid-life refresh on their models is circa 4-5 years, if you don't like this version you only have 5 years to wait for the next one Whistle

If this is on architecture that won't support full BEV I'd be surprised if this doesn't die completely at around the 6-8 year point, to be replaced with another completely new vehicle.
