Your advice would be much appreciated.
I have just bought my first 2.2 XS Station Wagon built in 2015 it has done about 28 k miles. My previous Defender was a 2001 TD5 owned by me from new and which had very few issues.
I am very new to the forum and should add that I am not very handy with spanners nevertheless I am gradually working my way through the posts to try to identify any problems which may occur in the future.
At the moment there are are two common issues which are bringing me close to a state of paranoia.

No. 1 is the output shaft from the gearbox which seems to be a weak link.
No 2 is the clutch which seems to be problematic.

I am seeking your advice as to what I should do.

If it is very likely that the output shaft will eventually fail without warning then obviously I must get it replaced. I have read on the forum that the Ashcroft replacement is the way to go.
If it also likely that the clutch will need replacing soon then perhaps it will be cheaper to have it done at the same time as the shaft replacement.Again I have read here that Clutchfix or LOF clutches are good alternatives to the OEM clutch.

I apologise for my naive rambling and realise that I am asking 'how long is a piece of string ' questions but any advice would be very welcome. 2015 90 XS Station Wagon Puma 2.2

Enjoy it. When it breaks get it fixed. Don’t worry about the imponderables. 😁

Agree with Huttopia.

The output shaft issue seems to be pot luck. You may have got a good one which will run forever, or a bad one which could fail tomorrow. Clutch lifespan seems a bit hit and miss as well.

I'd wait until one or the other fails and then consider replacing both at the same time whilst the engine and gearbox are separated.

I would definitely do both at the same time but wouldn't do either until you detect a problem with one of them. I have a 2.4 90 neither have been done at 82k miles but have parts ready for when they are required. Cheers

as above - defo do both at the same time.

I believe clutches generally go first and generally they get noisy / rattling before they let you down so try and enjoy till you detect a problem.

.....and by then there may be an alternative solution available for the output shaft issue Wink Whistle

Thank you for all your replies folks it is much appreciated.
I will now try to forget any potential problems, join a breakdown service and hope that it is the clutch that gives out first.

Discomog, with the exception of ground clearance have you noticed the similarity between Morgans and Defenders, build quality, ride comfort, reliability etc, etc. Why do we put ourselves through this? 2015 90 XS Station Wagon Puma 2.2
