Do you have relatives in cornwall or were you born there as I have heard it can be 20 years before your accepted as a local and that could effect your business,

Yes my family has had property down their for over 40 years and my parents moved their permanently for their retirement 20 years ago so we know the "local culture" and have never had any problems being accepted as long as you don't step on toes.
Which leads me on to one of my main concerns - how others would feel and react about competition  The people I know running tyre companies are.....well lets say you wouldn't mess with them  I could be in for "intimidation" maybe so really need the low down! |

Zag what do you do in Surrey? Setting up a tyre company sounds totally random.
Near us a company called Nick's Tyres - they look small fry and operate out of a small independent petrol station, but they do a roaring commercial trade and always give me a good service on the spot, when I need something, though i've not had cause to take the 110 to them yet. The Ka got retyred and balanced on all four wheels with Avons for £38/wheel, in 15m flat. I imagine it's a business that is hard to thrive in from day one. Mortgage free sounds perfect! |

Yes, just grabbing at straws for an idea to make a living. I started in farming when I left school in Dorset with a Diploma, got kicked out of the next college, then onto mechanics, then a manager at Scats/Mole Valley equivalent, then marketing in Bond Street, then Kentish Town City Farm, then University in Birmingham & Derbyshire for a Degree in Youth Work, then odd jobs building sites, security, factory work, farming etc then the Princes Trust in Bromley and worked my way up over the years to the top with 80 odd staff managing the boroughs youth & community work service! We didn't want a child minder when our kids arrived so I packed my nightmare job in and have looked after the kids for the last 6 years (easy life!  ) I started doing garden design, landscaping, fencing etc evenings and weekends to bring in the extra money needed whilst also moving and developing a couple of houses.
My wife has had enough as a teacher (working 12 hour days, part weekends and most of her holidays for the last god knows how many years - it's no life!) She has realised that she gets paid about £4 per hour for the amount of hours she does at management level and she is totally ground down. 25% of teachers don't go into the profession after qualifying and 75% leave within the first 5 years - it's a hell of a job in state schools  People have no idea.
I have had it very easy in comparison looking after the kids and working when I can SO IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE! We can move down to Cornwall which we both know very well and buy a 4 Bed property with land, mortgage free whilst we are stuck in suburbia up here with 1K going out each month unnecessarily. It may take a year or two until the timing with work and schools is right but it all makes sense 
I'm just trying to think of ideas at the moment and looking into business opportunities 
The money for the boat and Defender has come from buying and selling SAABs as a money making hobby for the last 20 years and one big 10K profit on a replica Jag. |

What about a mobile tyre service? There are plenty of independents around here and you would be able to service a much wider area than a static site.

I too have had 'complete lifechanging desires' I love fishing and one of the plans I came up with was to purchase a charter fishing boat in Poole and do half or full day charters for between 8 and 10 people. Overheads once the boat was purchased were quite high with liability insurance being the most costly. Nevertheless with a peak-season forecast of between £400 - £500 per day it seemed very viable. The prospect of being paid whilst doing what you love seemed very appealing. Sadly the old school mucker I was going in with couldn't raise the capital, the plan died a slow and painful death as I couldn't do it on my own. I know where you are with your dilemma and I wish you all the very best...finding the right commodity or service to sell can be a brainstorming experience. Good luck fella!!!!! Zag - my family did the same move in 1989 (West Horsley nr Guildford to Trebetherick nr Polzeath)
It can be tough, especially for kids but it's the best thing they ever did. You need to be determined, people here don't have a lot of cash BUT good businesses can do very well indeed. Truro (near where we live) is the only City and it's pretty well catered for with tyre dealers but again good service gets good business. Focus your ideas, seek help (there are free organisations down here that fall over themselves to help inward investment - `i can give you pointers and contacts) and I'd say GO FOR IT!! Hit the nail on the head there I reckon
IMHO, biggest issue in any new biz (and indeed any ongoing biz) is cashflow, so unless after you relocate and go mortage free you have a dirty great lump of cash left over, I'd try to find something that doesn't involve much outlay to begin with until the incoming cash gathers some momentum, then you can bolt on a few extra bits. Appreciate the tyre biz idea is just a brainstormer at the mo but I'm not sure what kind of stocks you'd need to run with day to day. Whilst I know we do take the p155 a bit on the rust prevention etc, it's clearly something you are both good at and passionate about, so can you make a biz from this??.... perhaps extending across to reach classic cars too?? Also, in time when the cash permits, perhaps throw in a few renovations etc. You're already making money at it as a spare time hobby... Not sure where you planning to relocate in Cornwall but the further off the beaten track you go, I would suggest the more 'local orientated' you need to be, unless you go mobile as has been suggested. If you want people outside the locality to visit you, then consider ease of access and proximity to main routes. If and when it becomes more concrete, gimme a shout as one of my bessie mates has this year relocated from Wiltshire to St Ives and taken on a partnership in a local accountants down there. I'm sure he'd be happy to chat to you about his experiences of the relocation process itself and indeed might be able to give you pointers on how to set up etc etc Echo the previous posts that say good luck and go for it Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. My advice is to go into religion. Loads of money, sex and no tax as it’s a charity! But you might have to wear a frock.

I have spent the past 10 years doing jobs that I love and want to do, which are also hobbies...It makes life very very enjoyable
I also foresee myself living in Cornwall soon...so I'll be a customer! |
