Sounds severe, I would assumed it was a maintenance change rather than a modification... I have Koni and never thought to tell anyone! If it was lifted...yes, but standard height i did not consider a "mod"... Worth thinking about! Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

I notify insurance of all changes to be on the safe side. A-Plan have been fine with everything, but there is normally a minimal admin charge just to note it on the policy. I suspect the £15 could possible be such an admin charge? James

Should I notify what brand of brake pads and what make of tyres? I personally think things start to get very opaque with what is and isn't a mod the more you think about it. Personally, I wouldn't consider standard height shocks a modification, but would my insurer see it the same way if they were trying to decide whether to pay out on a claim? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Years ago, I had the value of a claim reduced on a motorcycle accident because the rear tyre was partially worn.
Yes, they reduced the total loss value by the percentage of wear over the price of a new rear tyre. I did ask whether they had taken into consideration the headlight would probably blow within the next year and the seat was probably worn from being new? Not sure they got the irony. What hurt was the accident was caused by a car whose driver accepted complete blame. I suppose they made a few more quid? I never insured with them again as a matter of principle. Quite a hard one about how far to go with notifications. I don't use genuine windscreen wipers? I did ask my insurer about the Mud Panels I had put inside my utility wagon, but they were happy that it didn't need to be detailed. They also said my insurer would be happy if I fitted a wheel carrier as it was just a normal addition to a Defender. I was quite shocked Best thing is to ask. |

Seems a bit strange doesn't it My insurance company recently changed a windscreen for me and ironically it is not OEM. Should I notify them and get a £15 "admin fee" Defender 90XS SW

I wonder how my premium would be affected if I added a Browning 30-caliber?

I guess I should tell them everytime I remove the dixon bate slider, as that technically means it doesn't have a towbar any more?

One of my work colleagues fits winter tyres on his Audi. He rings up when he fits them, and rings again when they come off. They don't charge him, but they are adamant that they need to know. Can't tell you who he insures with, but he definately doesn't pay £15 a go.

Most insurers aren’t fussed about winters along as they are the right ones for the car:
https://www.abi.org.uk/globalassets/files/...itment.pdf It’s all a complete nonsense really. Any tyre that is not the exact same model as the original will have its wet\dry\hot\cold\snow\ice\gravel\mud\nurburgring performance balanced differently. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

Couldn't agree more, Bluest.
It's just the balancing act of what they want to know and what they don't. |

I rang the NFU when I changed the springs and ARB to the Alive one's and the standard shocks to Bilstein's. The only ting the stipulated was it had to be done by a garage and that they needed a copy of the paperwork. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

Reading this thread made me rethink my insurance so
Due to the number of mods (some big and lots of small ones) I have done to my Defender I looked at my current defender insurance with LV who I have been with for along time and they have been great but as the defender is well past standard I felt I needed better cover going forward so called A Plan Insurance for a quote. My current insurance still has 2 months to run with LV. I spent an hour and ten minutes on the phone dealing with Stan and whilst a long call I have to say I’m impressed to say the least. Stan was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and explained very clearly and concisely (very important when your getting older like me ) Since that call I have sent them a full and comprehensive list of “ALL” ‘YES ALL’ mods to date, as well as the dates the mods were done and the costs including if they are supply only items or supply and fit and I have all the paperwork to support this and have sent photographs of the defender as well to just in case it’s ever needed. I just wanted to make sure I had crossed the Ts and dotted the Is, because talking with Stan I realised I wasn’t totally covered with LV as I thought I was. Whilst a time consuming process putting all the above information together I feel it’s time very well spent and something I would suggest worthwhile doing because god forbid in the event of an accident I know I’m totally covered now. Whereas before I thought I was but I wouldn’t have been!! All the new policy paperwork was with me by email within 30 minutes, I had to make 2 telephone calls back to them to clarify an email address and another general point but again the guys I dealt with were very efficient too. Yes my premium has increased but in fairness we weren’t comparing like for like because I now have an agreed value as well as some extras on my new policy that I didn’t have before, I also have half the excess I had before. Would I recommend them YES I would, I hope not to have to contact them again until renewal time next year but feel if I had to in the event of making a claim based on the service this morning it would be handled smoothly and effectively. Guys if you do nothing else this weekend double check you have declared all your mods, don’t think oh I won’t bother to mention that it will be ok......... it may not be and if you have an accident and the insurance don’t pay out you won’t only lose your defender but perhaps more if your taken to court for damages by the other party. Oh and if your interested my premium now for fully protected no claims, business use doing 18000 miles a year, £250 excess fully comprehensive cover for the wife and I to drive is £440.00 per year or £1.20 per day. LV policy now cancelled and a refund received as well Thumbs Up Check your insurance policies just to be safe guys. 2015 HT XS 90 2008 SVX 90 2000 XS TD5 90 |
