Sounds like your starter solenoid may need rebuilding. Has nothing to do with locking and unlocking that might be just coincidental. Its actually turning the key a few times that gets it to start by energizing the solenoid a few times. Worth considering looking at it. Its an easy and cheap fix.

if it's a sticky solenoid, try thumping it with a lump of wood to free it up... worked for me for a while... but ultimately it will need rebuilt, kits on ebay for about a tenner I think...

Had the same problem a few months ago, it was the starter connection onto the solenoid it was loose and covered in oil and road dirt, cut an inch off the cable put on a new crimp and cleaned the connection on the solenoid no more problems. nobody is perfect but being Scottish is a start
