Oil leak

As a complete TD5 newbie, im not really sure of the severity of this oil leak but it seams to be from every orifice. It’s a 2006 model with 110,000 miles on the clock.

I’ve attached some photos but could someone kindly point out how bad this could potentially be and what I can do about rectifying it.

1999 Defender 110 Td5 SW Caledonian Blue

Start with a clean underneath. from up top I would remove the engine cover and clean around there. Give it a few days and see if you can see the leak.

Mine leaks from;
Rear of the rocker gasket from the half moon.
From the front cam seal (the round plastic disc you can see at the front of the engine)
and other unfound/located leak.

First things first don't worry too much about it. They all seem to leak.

Is it dripping a lot of oil onto the drive? If so just keep an eye on your dipstick until its fixed.

You need to find the highest point on the engine it is leaking from.

I'd suggest an engine steam clean and then take it for a run so you can see where it is actually leakign from. Oil can be blown a fair old distance backwards from driving.

Once you know where it is leakign from you can figure out next steps.

Alternativly take it to you your local friendly garage and ask them.

Looks similar to mine.

I have no drips onto the drive and the oil level is always good. The only problem I have is when it comes round to MOT and I get the advisory "Oil leak". I wish they would tell me where from so I could do something about it

Thanks for the reply’s, I should have mentioned that I’ve not yet bought it. It’s one I’m thinking of purchasing so unfortunately the Ideas of cleaning it then checking after are not possible. I will however check the highest point of the leak. It has been on the drive for 3 weeks and there is an oil stain underneath so I do know it’s actively leaking. My main concern was that the mot advisories said, ‘oil seepage’ and ‘oil on minimum level’

That could be a photo of my old 2003 TD5 130!
The leak on mine turned out to be the sump gasket.
Easy job to do and not expensive at all.

Cleaning the drive on the other hand......

Advantage of a leak is it does wonders stopping corrosion. My logic
when buying was I could easily fix an oil leak but corrosion once there is permanent

Probably piddling out of the cam seals, wouldn’t worry too much looks like every Td5

Contrary to most of the replies here, Td5 engines shouldn't leak. Mine has 136k miles on it and is bone dry. I would remove the acoustic cover from the top. Get some Gunk engine degreaser and then steam clean ideally (or jet wash) the engine avoiding seals and sensors.

It will then be much easier to identify the point(s) of oil egress.

Most of the common leak points are easily remedied

So providing it’s not something catastrophic what sort of money do you think I’ll be looking at to rectify or at least slow down the leak?

If you can do it yourself and you probably can, it will not cost much except a lot off time.

Seals and gaskets are cheap but if somebody else has to do it labour is expensive. I think you will spend less the 100 pound on gaskets. Roel

Thanks for all the help guys, with that knowledge under my belt i was going to put an offer in but have just found out it was sold yesterday.

Never mind, at least i know what to look for on the next one
